About the Role

Medical Laboratory Scientists in the Microbiology department play a critical role in diagnosing and managing infectious diseases through routine and complex molecular, microbiological, and immunological testing. Team members adhere to strict aseptic techniques, follow safety protocols, and ensure precise data entry and quality assurance. In addition to bench work, MLS professionals troubleshoot instruments, work on LEAN processes, and collaborate with providers and nurses to support patient care. The Microbiology team processes samples from multiple locations within the health system, leveraging advanced technologies such as molecular testing and other high-complexity methods while applying LEAN principles to enhance efficiency and maintain excellence in diagnostics.

Responsibilities

  • Performs routine and complex analytic procedures on blood, body fluids, or specimens using manual techniques or laboratory instruments and information systems for diagnosing, preventing, or treating disease.
  • Applies knowledge, training, and independent clinical judgment to take action and develop solutions in collaboration with leadership.
  • Evaluates instrument performance and quality control results to ensure accuracy and reliability of analytic data prior to release.
  • Correlates test results with other lab data and disease states, identifying technical, instrument, pharmacologic, or physiologic causes of unexpected results.
  • Performs calibration, preventive maintenance, quality control, and troubleshooting of laboratory equipment, instruments, and information systems.
  • After competency testing, performs processing, testing, and reporting without direct supervision.
  • Complies with departmental and institutional policies, including quality assessment, safety, environmental, and infection control protocols.
  • Maintains confidentiality of patient information.
  • Participates in quality assessment and improvement activities, including proficiency testing, data gathering, and adherence to safe work practices.
  • Maintains the laboratory and procedures in an inspection-ready condition.

Requirements

  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, with coursework aligned to the duties of the specific Medical Laboratory discipline position.
  • Must meet education eligibility routes for Medical Laboratory Scientist as listed on the ASCP website (ascp.org), or possess a categorical scientist-level certification (BB, C, CG, CT, M, MB), or meet requirements for AAB and/or AMT certifications.
  • Six months of experience in a medical laboratory setting.
  • Demonstrated technical proficiency and theoretical knowledge sufficient to perform laboratory functions.

Qualifications

  • Certification at the technologist or medical/clinical lab scientist level from a nationally recognized agency (e.g., ASCP, AMT, ASM, AAB, AABB, ACS, or HEW) is preferred.

Additional Information

This position is located at Henry Ford Hospital - Detroit Main Campus in the Pathology Microbiology department. The shift for this role is evenings.
