Job Summary

Precisely produce and report timely, accurate, and reliable test results in waived, moderate, and high complexity tests as defined by CLIA. Follow established procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting, and maintaining records of patient test results. Ensure all specimens and requisitions are correctly labeled to perform the requested tests on the right patient specimens.

  • Recognize abnormal and/or critical test values independently and decide whether retesting or confirmatory testing is necessary.
  • Perform and monitor quality control on test systems/equipment as required.
  • Review results and report accordingly.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and troubleshoot equipment as necessary.

Responsibilities

  • Manage clinical lab inventory and perform various administrative duties as assigned.
  • Participate in required proficiency testing and competency evaluations.
  • Process specimens in a timely manner and in the appropriate way for testing in-house or sending to a reference lab, ensuring specimen integrity.
  • Maintain inventory and expiration dates of supplies and reagents, requesting necessary supplies in a timely manner.
  • Maintain weekly, monthly, and quarterly checklists for the clinical lab, documenting all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from established performance specifications.
  • Notify the Medical Lab Supervisor I and/or Medical Lab Technologist I of critical values, instrument or test malfunctions, etc., or be responsible for final review of own work before releasing results.
  • Decontaminate work surfaces and reusable supplies as necessary and dispose of biohazardous materials and sharps appropriately.
  • Answer questions from patients and other staff regarding lab policies and procedures, testing, etc.

Phlebotomy

  • Draw blood on adult, adolescent, and pediatric patients following OSHA Bloodborne Pathogen regulations.
  • Use standard phlebotomy supplies and equipment for venipuncture and capillary puncture.
  • Reassure patients, including pediatric patients, about the phlebotomy procedure.
  • Collect blood specimens in the appropriate containers for the tests to be performed.

Additional Support

  • Fill in at the Havelock clinic as assigned by the supervisor and transport specimen, mail, supplies, etc. to the CCHD New Bern office at the end of the day.
  • In the event of a disaster, assist as needed.

Qualifications

  • A minimum of one year of medical laboratory experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • An associate's degree in medical technology from an appropriately accredited institution, or completion of a certified laboratory assistant course in medical technology or a comparable course, with experience in high complexity testing (microbiology and hematology) preferred.
  • ASCP, CLS, HEW, or an equivalent certification or eligibility is required.

Special Requirements

  • Subject to a SBI criminal history record check prior to hire.
