Responsibilities

  • Follows standard operating procedures for collecting, accepting appropriate samples, processing, and analyzing biological specimens and other substances for routine and complex laboratory tests.
  • Integrates clinical and laboratory data to make decisions regarding possible discrepancies.
  • Verifies results in the laboratory information system.
  • Maintains timely completion for high priority samples by monitoring workload.
  • Executes, verifies, and documents quality control procedures.
  • Monitors and corrects quality control results to maintain accuracy and precision of testing systems.
  • Performs preventive maintenance on equipment and instruments, detects problems, and implements corrective procedures.
  • Teaches laboratory procedures to students and employees in training.
  • Participates in developing and meeting continuous quality improvement standards for the department.
  • Provides information to customers inquiring about specimen status, collection requirements, and test orders and results, ensuring the customer receives the necessary information.
  • Performs any other duties as assigned by supervisor, Technical Specialist, or Manager.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree is required.
  • New graduates (90 days post graduation) completing an accredited educational institution must be registry eligible and obtain certification within 18 months of employment. This 18-month exemption only applies to graduates where Grady Health System is their first job post-graduation.
  • Must be certified as a Medical Technologist by American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or National Certification Agency (NCA) or deemed registry eligible as a Medical Technologist by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP).
  • Graduate of a National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) accredited School of Medical Technology and registry eligible.
