Overview

The Medical Interpreter I is responsible for assessing the needs of patients and providing interpretation of consent forms, diagnoses, discharge plans, and other patient-related information. Located in Boston and the surrounding communities, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute is a leader in cancer research and patient care.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Responsible for immediately and effectively answering requests for interpretation throughout the Institute, with a priority for emergency and more urgent requests.
  • Arrives on time to appointments and provides services from the point of entry throughout discharge.
  • Interprets and transmits complex medical information accurately and in understandable terms, including consent forms, diagnoses, during medical procedures, discharge plans, and other patient-related information.
  • Assists patients and clinical providers professionally and courteously, providing high-quality service at each appointment.
  • Seeks evaluation, certification, and additional training in interpreting, health care practices, and cultural differences.
  • Maintains an environment that promotes collaborative work relationships and assists Interpreter Services staff with office-related tasks as needed.
  • Processes assignments properly, logs information correctly, contacts patients, and informs Interpreter Services department of any changes promptly.
  • Maintains complete and accurate records of services rendered and documentation of all patient-related information.
  • Solves most issues within daily responsibilities, answers questions, and makes appropriate referrals. More complex issues are handled by the Supervisor of Interpreter Services.
  • Interprets medical information between medical providers and patients/families using in-person/on-campus, video, or telephonic methods.
  • Recognizes and respects diversity for all patients and DFCI workforce, intervening as a cultural broker when communication is compromised by culture-bound messages.
  • Fulfills the recognized Medical Interpreter Codes of Ethics and Standards of Practice.
  • Completes and passes assessments for initial interpreter screening and ongoing competencies, including medical terminology, code of ethics and standards of practice, the role of the medical interpreter, and interpreter’s skills.

  • Strong organizational skills, problem-solving abilities, and ability to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to follow directions with minimal supervision.

Minimum Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree with a concentration in a human relations field (e.g., Sociology, Psychology) preferred.
  • One year of experience working as a medical interpreter required.
  • Working knowledge of medical terminology, basic anatomy, physiology, and diagnostic procedures and treatments, as well as the roles of the medical interpreter and the nationally recognized medical interpreting codes of ethics and standards of practice.
  • Fluent in English and target language, both verbally and in writing.
  • Certificate of completion of medical interpreter training program required. National Certification preferred.

License/Certification/Registration Required

  • Certificate of completion of medical interpreter training program.
