About the role

UC Health is hiring a Full Time Medical Assistant for University Health Services. The Medical Assistant functions as an integral part of the Clinical office staff, performing administrative and clinical duties. Responsibilities include obtaining intake information for a specific patient population, performing delegated tasks and treatments, providing direct patient care, scheduling tests and procedures, and offering limited patient education and instructions.

Responsibilities

  • Patient Population – Clinical Only:
    • Engages in population-appropriate communication.
    • Applies knowledge of growth and development milestones and tasks.
    • Provides clear instructions to patients/family regarding treatment.
    • Involves family/guardian in assessment, initial treatment, and continuing care.
    • Identifies physical limitations and deploys necessary interventions.
    • Recognizes and responds appropriately to behavioral health needs.
    • Interprets population-related data and plans care accordingly.
    • Identifies and responds to unique psychological, religious, or cultural needs.
    • Performs treatments, administers medication, or operates equipment safely.
    • Recognizes and responds to signs/symptoms of abuse or neglect.
    • Obtains vital signs, EKGs, laboratory specimens, and other required information in accordance with Medical Assistant competencies, using universal precautions.
    • Assists the provider in documenting notes, orders, and prescriptions by setting them up in the Electronic Medical Record for review, editing, and signing.
    • Prepares and maintains the clinic area, including cleaning and stocking examination rooms, daily setup and securing of computer equipment, and maintenance of diagnostic equipment.
    • Returns routine patient telephone calls (e.g., prescription refills, pre-certifications) with appropriate documentation.
    • Coordinates ancillary services such as diagnostic testing/imaging, hospital procedures, additional visits, and acquisition of medical records.
    • Maintains a positive, professional, and cooperative demeanor with patients, staff, physicians, and management.
    • Ensures a safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following standards, procedures, and legal regulations.
    • Protects patient confidentiality and adheres to legal responsibilities of the medical assistant role.
    • Seeks understanding of quality measures and patient experience.
  • Administrative Duties:
    • Uses computer applications.
    • Answers telephones and greets patients.
    • Updates and files patient medical records.
    • Codes and completes insurance forms.
    • Schedules appointments and arranges hospital admissions and laboratory services.
    • Handles correspondence, billing, and bookkeeping.
    • Assists in implementing age-appropriate care for specific patient populations as part of the clinical team.

Qualifications

  • Minimum: High School Diploma or GED.
  • Preferred: 7–11 months of equivalent experience.
