About the role

The Medical Assistant functions as an integral part of the Clinical office staff, performing both administrative and clinical duties. Responsibilities include obtaining intake information for a specific patient population, performing tasks and treatments as delegated by licensed personnel, and providing direct patient care. The role also involves scheduling tests and procedures ordered by the physician and offering limited patient education and instructions related to these tests and procedures.

Responsibilities

Patient Population (Clinical Only)

  • Engages in population-appropriate communication.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of growth and development milestones and tasks.
  • Provides clear instructions to patients/family regarding treatment.
  • Involves family/guardian in the assessment, initial treatment, and continuing care of the patient.
  • Identifies physical limitations of the patient and deploys intervention when necessary.
  • Recognizes and responds appropriately to patients/families with behavioral health problems.
  • Interprets population-related data and plans care appropriately.
  • Identifies and responds to unique psychological needs or those associated with religious/cultural norms.
  • Performs treatments, administers medication, or operates equipment safely.
  • Recognizes and responds to signs/symptoms of abuse or neglect.
  • Obtains vital signs, EKGs, laboratory specimens, and other necessary information for proper patient evaluation, adhering to universal precautions.
  • Assists the provider in documenting notes, orders, and prescriptions by setting them up in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR). All documents, prescriptions, and orders are pended to the provider for review, editing, and signing.
  • Prepares and maintains the clinic area, including cleaning and stocking examination rooms, daily setup and securing of computer equipment, and maintenance of diagnostic equipment.
  • Returns routine patient telephone calls (e.g., prescription refills or pre-certification for medication) as directed from the EMR, with appropriate and timely documentation.
  • Coordinates ancillary services such as diagnostic testing/imaging, hospital procedures/admissions, additional patient visits, and acquisition of pertinent medical records.
  • Maintains a positive, professional, and cooperative demeanor in all interactions with patients, staff, physicians, and management.
  • Maintains a safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following standards and procedures and complying with legal regulations.
  • Protects patient confidentiality and adheres to legal responsibilities and requirements of the medical assistant role.
  • Seeks knowledge and understanding of quality measures and patient experience.
  • Assists in implementing age-appropriate care for specific patient populations, including direct patient care as part of the clinical team.

Administrative Duties

  • Using computer applications.
  • Answering telephones.
  • Greeting patients.
  • Updating and filing patient medical records.
  • Coding and filling out insurance forms.
  • Scheduling appointments.
  • Arranging for hospital admissions and laboratory services.
  • Handling correspondence, billing, and bookkeeping.

Qualifications

Minimum Required: High School Diploma or GED.

Preferred: 7–11 months of equivalent experience.
