About the Role

The Medical Assistant assists in examination and treatment of patients under the direction of a physician. Works under close supervision of the physician and clinic manager.

Responsibilities

  • Patient Care
    • Properly identifies patients by requesting name and date of birth prior to interactions.
    • Ensures confidentiality of protected patient health information by utilizing HIPAA-compliant practices.
    • Completes and documents patient visit notes, including chief complaint, medical/surgical history, family history, vital signs, immunizations, allergies, medications, nutrition, and wellness issues.
    • Accurately and safely administers and documents waived testing under physician supervision.
    • Prepares, stocks, and cleans exam rooms; maintains supplies and equipment for patient care.
    • Prepares and administers medications per physician orders and organizational policies.
    • Assists with minor surgical procedures and handles/processes specimens and cultures.
    • Provides basic clinical care measures to all age groups per clinical skills checklist.
  • Coordination of Care
    • Manages patient flow to ensure physician efficiency, including scheduling and wait times.
    • Instructs patients/families on diagnostic procedures, medications, nutrition, and wellness using pre-approved materials.
    • Retrieves and sends patient health information to authorized individuals per HIPAA and organizational policies.
    • Notifies patients of test results, medication changes, or treatment plan updates within 48 hours as instructed.
    • Calls in non-narcotic prescriptions to pharmacies per physician orders and organizational policies.
    • Coordinates diagnostic testing and communicates with healthcare providers regarding patient care.
    • Responds to patient/family questions and concerns appropriately.
  • Quality and Compliance
    • Adheres to corporate compliance procedures, accrediting standards, and ethical/religious directives.
    • Understands chemical hazards and accesses MSDS information as needed.
    • Takes prompt action during emergencies and documents events in the electronic safety system.
    • Participates in quality improvement initiatives, including data gathering and process changes.
    • Observes all policies, safety, quality assurance, and infection control standards.
    • Uses equipment, supplies, and facilities efficiently to ensure high-quality care.
    • Pursues continuing education and professional development.
  • Regulatory and Operational Support
    • Works with other medical assistants to ensure compliance and competency in documentation.
    • Assists with regulatory processes, including monitoring logs and measuring clinic compliance.
    • Counts and orders vaccines, medications, and clinical supplies.
    • Performs medical record audits and collaborates with management on documentation improvements.
    • May train and orient new team members on policies, procedures, and workflows.
    • Collaborates with health information management for clinical documentation audits.
  • Additional Duties
    • Assists with clerical tasks such as answering phones, filing, preparing charts, and managing referrals.
    • Verifies and confirms patient benefits; coordinates paperwork for FMLA or back-to-work/school needs.
    • Supports practice efforts, including flu clinics, community health events, and job-site projects.

Requirements

  • Completion of a medical assistant program or 1 year of clinical experience.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Computer literacy; proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, electronic health records, and other software.
  • BLS certification required.
