Medical Assistant Lead (Ambulatory)

About the role

The Medical Assistant III at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago is responsible for providing daily clinical support in the outpatient/primary care setting. This role may also involve daily scheduling and clinic flow management. The Medical Assistant III collaborates with leadership to ensure efficient workflows and supports a collaborative team environment.

Responsibilities

  • Performs phlebotomy and specimen processing as directed by delegating providers.
  • Administers intramuscular, subcutaneous, intradermal, topical medications, ophthalmic drops, and nasal sprays.
  • Depending on location, performs ECGs, places Holter monitors, and downloads telemetry data.
  • Works in conjunction with other staff to optimize clinic flow.
  • Intervenes appropriately in emergency situations.
  • Documents data and changes in the Electronic Medical Record.
  • Supports administrative tasks such as scheduling patient visits and performing “check-in, check-out” activities.
  • Obtains measurements, patient histories, and other intake activities.
  • Stocks and maintains the clinic area, including ordering supplies as needed.
  • Manages inventory, including placing orders, managing par levels, and conducting quality control for High Level Disinfection.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of chemical disinfection, high-level disinfection, and sterilization protocols.
  • Completes required trainings and educations, including Healthcare Provider CPR.
  • Collaborates with leadership to develop and adjust weekly ambulatory schedules and ensures overall compliance with safety and regulatory guidelines.
  • Orients new Medical Assistants and contingency staff.
  • Participates in Department Process Improvement activities and unit-based or organizational-wide committees.

Requirements

  • High school diploma required.
  • Successful completion of a formal Medical Assistant program.
  • At least 5 years of relevant clinical experience.
  • Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) (AAMA) or Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) preferred but not required.
  • Some college education preferred.
  • Basic Life Support certification from the American Heart Association.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficient computer skills and aptitude.
  • Problem-solving ability and ability to handle multiple priorities.
  • Ability to handle stressful situations.

Skills

  • Knowledge of pertinent aspects and competency with protocols related to the use of chemical disinfection, high-level disinfection, and sterilization.
  • Strong organizational and multitasking skills.
  • Effective communication and collaboration abilities.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Pay

The pay range for this position is $21.00 - $32.55 hourly. Lurie Children’s offers competitive salaries aligned with market rates and internal equity, reflecting individual contributions, experience, and expertise.
