About the role
The Medical Assistant I serves as a clinical support partner in the Fairwood Clinic, acting as a liaison between patients and providers. This role requires the ability to anticipate patient needs, manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment, and work to the maximum limit of certification while adhering to scope of practice under the direction of a healthcare practitioner.
Responsibilities
- Perform initial intake screening, including verifying the reason for the patient visit and obtaining vital signs per network policy.
- Prepare and maintain examination and treatment areas, including setting up for procedures and treatments.
- Assist providers with patient flow, time management, and examinations, procedures, and treatments.
- Maintain and update patient records, including medication, immunization, and health maintenance records.
- Schedule, coordinate, and monitor appointments, and complete daily patient recalls.
- Apply principles of aseptic techniques and infection control, including standard precautions, hand washing, and disposal of biohazards.
- Perform inventory of supplies and equipment, and routine maintenance of administrative and clinical equipment.
- Review and complete ancillary charges for office visits and perform "clean" billing submittals.
- Perform venous and capillary invasive procedures for blood withdrawal, and administer intradermal, subcutaneous, and intramuscular injections.
- Apply or assist with application of durable medical equipment, and administer medications and immunizations as ordered by the provider.
- Perform tympanograms, ear irrigations (with provider order), and waived laboratory tests.
- Provide approved patient education and instructions.
- Manage back-office duties, including:
- Participating in huddles with providers to anticipate needs, orders, and procedures for the day.
- Tracking patient arrivals and communicating assignments.
- Reading, investigating, and forwarding messages to appropriate providers, and contacting patients when messages are answered.
- Calling pharmacies to submit prescriptions approved in the EMR or refaxing through electronic fax.
- Facilitating care management calls, expediting written orders from providers, and ensuring all paperwork is signed off in a timely manner.
- Managing messaging and order workflow, organizing and allocating orders, and researching and responding to messages promptly.
- Act as a communication liaison between the physician, patient, and clinic staff, ensuring clear and professional interactions.
Requirements
- Vetted by the State through testing as a Medical Assistant Certified (MA-C).
- Current American Heart Association CPR/BLS for Healthcare Providers.
- Good to excellent computer skills, including the ability to navigate between multiple applications.
- Able to communicate effectively in oral and written English.
- Neat and professional appearance.
- Ability to maintain a calm demeanor in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions and multitasking demands.
- Demonstrated ability to function effectively in a team-based clinic structure and respect cultural diversity.
- Understanding of clinic workflow, patient flow, and the ability to anticipate provider and patient needs.
- Proficiency in using electronic medical records (EMR) and other electronic technologies for documentation and communication.
Qualifications
- Demonstrated knowledge and comprehension of the Medical Assistant scope of practice and role.
- Ability to perform within legal and ethical boundaries, including accurate documentation and compliance with state, federal, and regulatory agencies.
- Demonstrated ability to engage and master the role of a Medical Assistant in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to comprehend, execute, and act within the limits of MA scope of practice while under the direction of a healthcare practitioner.
- Strong customer service and patient care skills, with the ability to interact professionally with a wide range of patients and staff.
- Ability to communicate effectively with all age groups and adapt to their physical and emotional development.
- Experience with quality assurance practices, infection control, and standard precautions.
- For OBGYN Clinic positions: Minimum two years of recent outpatient/medical office OBGYN medical assisting experience.
Pay
Salary range: $30.49–$46.17 per hour, based on experience. $6,000 sign-on incentive available.
