About the role
The Medical Assistant performs clinical and administrative duties as assigned, operating within the scope of practice defined by state law. Clinical responsibilities include taking medical histories, recording vital signs, explaining treatment procedures, preparing patients for examination, assisting providers during exams, instructing patients about medications and special diets, preparing and administering medications, and drawing blood. Administrative duties may include answering telephones, greeting patients, updating and filing medical records, scheduling appointments, handling correspondence, billing, and bookkeeping.
Responsibilities
- Fulfill patient care responsibilities as assigned within the MA scope of practice, including vital signs, procedures, and patient education.
- Assist patients in navigating care through the encounter process to minimize ambiguity.
- Accurately document all aspects of patient encounters required for job functions.
- Track and document closed-loop communication with patients, including labs, return calls, and refills.
- Communicate with external and internal parties to facilitate continuity of care.
- Complete supportive assignments on time and without prompting, such as performing controls, instrument maintenance, infection control, ordering, sorting, storing supplies, and restocking.
- Provide patient teaching and care plan support.
- Guard patient privacy and comply with HIPAA regulations at all times.
- Actively participate in quality improvement activities.
- Participate in staff meetings as required.
- Complete annual competencies within the required time frame.
- Communicate effectively in English in person, by phone, and in writing.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED.
- One year of related work experience preferred, or on-the-job training for two or more years.
- RMA, CMA, or CCMA certification required.
- BLS/CPR certification required.
