About the role

The Medical Assistant/CMA or CNA assists providers in care, medical record documentation, and treatment so patients can receive quality care. They also welcome patients, verify patient information, prepare patients for visits, assist during exams, support treatment plans, and ensure patient and staff safety.

Responsibilities

  • Welcome patients by greeting them, in person or on the phone.
  • Verify patient information by interviewing patient; reviewing and recording medical history and confirming purpose of visit.
  • Prepare patients for health care visit by directing and or accompanying them to the exam room; providing examination gowns or shorts; assisting them to position themselves, arranging exam room, instruments, supplies and equipment.
  • Ensure all related reports, labs and imaging are available in patient’s records prior to visit.
  • Supports patient care by assisting providers during exam; drawing up medications for injections; completing records by recording examination, treatment and test results.
  • Relays treatment plan to checkout receptionist.
  • Keeps exam room and injection station supplies ready by inventorying stock, placing orders and verifying receipt.
  • Ensures that patients receive appropriate competent and quality clinical care and that customer service meets patient’s expectations.
  • Adheres by staff to all policy and procedures.
  • Reports, monitors and manages patient and staff incidents.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited High school program or higher.
  • Certificate of training for Nurse’s Aide.
  • Current BLS.
  • Valid driver’s license.

Qualifications

  • CMA course preferred, not required.
  • Preferable, but not mandatory, 6 months of PACU/Medical Surgical experience.
  • Experience with computers and office equipment, required.
  • The ability to read and communicate effectively in English thus assuring effective communication with all hospital staff, medical staff, patients and their families by providing and maintaining open lines of communication. Bilingual is a plus.
  • Must understand medical terminology.
  • General Math skills.
  • Can frequently and consistently make sound judgments.
  • Must be organized, multi-tasker, and a critical thinker.
  • Must be able to understand input from the supervisor and/or manager concerning errors and instructions.
  • The ability to concentrate for long periods of time.
  • Good communication skills, and ability to work well with others.
  • Team player and flexible.
  • Can work well under pressure and meet multiple and competing deadlines.
  • Good customer service skills.
  • Can recognize and understand the complexity and reflex-testing of laboratory complexity.
  • Basic computer knowledge along with basic knowledge of CPSI and patient scheduling.
  • Must be able to handle/defuse conflict issues with patients, their families and staff.
