Position Overview

The Medical Assistant Apprentice is enrolled in Singing River Health System's apprenticeship program, which includes 1.5 years of academic study, clinical training, mentoring, and confidence-building. This apprentice works under the supervision of a physician to manage patient care. They provide patient care in a caring and professional manner, with a defined scope of practice. They also assist nursing staff in providing nursing care according to the established plan of care. A registered nurse or licensed practical nurse provides supervision for nursing-related duties. All duties must be performed in accordance with Singing River Health System procedures, policies, accreditation organization guidelines, and governing publications.

Education

A high school diploma or equivalent is required.

License/Certifications

  • Must be a Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) from the American Medical Technologists (AMT) or American Registry of Medical Assistants (ARMA) by the end of the apprenticeship.
  • Must maintain registration according to AMT or ARMA standards.
  • Must complete and maintain BCLS certification upon hire and/or transfer.

Experience

Minimum of one (1) year experience as a Medical Assistant is preferred.

Apprenticeship Course Instructor/Patient Care Manager

Physical Demands

  • Moderately active work involving sitting with frequent movement around the office and facility.
  • Exerting a negligible amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
  • Repetitive motions involving wrists, hands, and fingers while operating standard office equipment like a computer keyboard.
  • Close visual and acuity needed to perform daily work activities.
  • Ability to work extended periods without undue fatigue.
  • Must be able to work flexible schedules as needed.

Mental Demands

  • Demonstrate keen mental faculties and assessment and decision-making abilities.
  • Show superior communication skills, both speaking and writing.
  • Work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Maintain collaborative and respectful working relationships.
  • Multi-task in complex situations.

Special Demands

  • Superior customer service skills and professional etiquette.
  • Proficient in using a computer (keyboard proficiency), other office technology (telephone, fax), MS Outlook and Word.
  • Appropriate clinical judgment and professional skills for a patient population of all ages.
