Medical Account Director - National Account
About the Role
The Clinical, Medical and Regulatory (CMR) department at Novo Nordisk is one of the most diverse and collaborative groups within the organization. From healthcare provider interactions and developing regulatory strategies with the FDA to providing medical education and collecting data to support efficacy and new product development, CMR is involved. The role sits within Field Medical Affairs (FMA) and has primary responsibility for directing clinical engagement efforts and developing/implementing medical account strategies on behalf of Novo Nordisk among identified strategic and priority Managed Markets accounts.
As the primary Medical Affairs point of contact to key payers, this individual provides evidence-based scientific information (proactive and reactive clinical and HEOR information) for Novo Nordisk products to executive decision makers, thought leaders, and business influencers. They are accountable for developing and maintaining strong ongoing clinical relationships with business-critical customers, including C-suite individuals, Pharmacy Directors, Medical Directors, and other key clinical decision makers within both strategic and priority Managed Markets accounts.
Responsibilities
- Manage a strong network of external relationships with key C-suite individuals, pharmacy directors, medical directors, and other customer groups within Managed Markets.
- Serve as the primary clinical point of contact and subject matter expert for key strategic and priority Managed Markets accounts.
- Provide monthly reports on scientific leadership activities, including budget expenditures, to the Field Director.
- Record all activities within One Stop Shop (OSS) and expenses within Concur in accordance with FMA procedures.
- Secure and maintain effective administrative management of strategic national/regional business, operational, and educational budgets.
- Act as a scientific resource for healthcare providers (HCPs) and other Novo Nordisk employees.
- Attend and present at assigned medical and scientific meetings and symposia to maintain knowledge of current issues and new data pertaining to Novo Nordisk products.
- Develop, establish, and maintain relationships with key Managed Care Customers.
- Convey appropriate use of Novo Nordisk products and enhance their utilization.
- Provide leadership alongside Account Executives in answering unsolicited questions from Managed Care Customers.
- Combine account management skills, business acumen, and scientific expertise to enhance value and develop collaborative relationships.
- Establish and maintain a strong network of relationships with key healthcare providers and formulary influencers.
- Respond to inquiries to establish and further the knowledge of Novo Nordisk products and related topics.
- Develop the medical account strategy/plan through identification and cultivation of key relationships and collaboration opportunities.
- Gather customer insights regarding Novo Nordisk and competitor products to inform medical and commercial decision-making.
- Maintain a thorough and detailed working knowledge of Novo Nordisk, its products, and current scientific research.
- Manage, prepare, and conduct ongoing product and scientific updates for various audiences.
- Participate and present in special regional and national projects (e.g., team meetings, training).
- Understand and adhere to legal and regulatory guidelines of the pharmaceutical industry.
- Assist the Director with planning and delivering presentations for Managed Markets POA meetings.
- Educate Managed Care Account Executives on product knowledge and technical information within the therapeutic area.
- Facilitate the development of Managed Care Symposia and education for healthcare providers on relevant topics.
- Support the Director in developing Managed Markets strategic initiatives and team training needs.
- Adapt to competing demands and shifting priorities, helping others meet new challenges effectively.
- Embody Novo Nordisk’s Leadership Competencies and develop individual goals aligned with business strategies.
- Proactively share best practices with the Managed Markets and broader Field Medical Affairs team.
- Provide expert advice/guidance to Novo Nordisk Senior Leadership on Managed Markets strategy and execution.
- Offer expert support, mentorship, and training to regional medical liaisons and internal medical affairs personnel.
- Serve as a mentor for new hire or more junior Managed Markets team members.
- Communicate clinical account strategies to Novo Nordisk Senior Leadership and Core Medical Teams.
- Develop and present product and advanced scientific updates for Formulary presentations.
- Direct and lead clinical engagement efforts at key strategic and priority Managed Markets accounts.
- Drive the development and implementation of Managed Markets strategy in alignment with Medical and Brand strategy.
- Manage and facilitate potential Pharmacoeconomic and Managed Care-initiated studies in the regions.
- Refer requests for research grants to the Research Grants Committee or other appropriate in-house committees.
- Collaborate with Marketing, Managed Markets, HEOR management, and other FMA teams to develop scientific strategies.
- Provide advanced scientific leadership for marketed products and development projects within Managed Markets accounts, focusing on diabetes.
- Work collaboratively with Senior Management of Managed Markets, HEOR, and Medical Affairs to identify and coordinate medical support needs.
- Design, develop, and deliver advanced scientific presentations to individuals and groups of strategic importance.
- Develop and deliver advanced formulary presentations using approved material.
- Develop, maintain, and execute medical account plans for key strategic and priority Managed Markets accounts.
- Identify, develop, and implement projects that align key clinical decision makers' interests with those of Novo Nordisk.
Requirements
- A minimum of 6 years of experience in a health-related system, pharmaceutical company, or managed care environment (an advanced degree may substitute for experience when appropriate), with at least 3 years of work experience in a field medical liaison role.
- A PharmD or other Doctoral degree (e.g., MD, PhD) with advanced professional licensure (e.g., NP, RPh) is required.
- A strong knowledge of clinical development/operations and working knowledge of FDA requirements.
- A strong knowledge of health economics and demonstrated ability to conduct value-based discussions with key Managed Markets customers.
- A thorough understanding of the formulary process across various payer channels.
- Ability to work effectively in a cross-functional team environment.
- Advanced, in-depth understanding of the U.S. healthcare system, payers, reimbursement methods, and integrated health systems.
- Demonstrated ability to consistently engage business-critical Managed Markets customers and execute against challenges in a continually changing healthcare/payer landscape.
- Demonstrated excellence in leadership, strategic influencing, initiative ability, project management, internal and external relationship development, analytical/problem-solving skills, and written/verbal communication skills.
- Demonstrated flexibility in technical expertise across disease areas is preferred.
- Experience in account management and/or project management is preferred.
- Expert technical depth in disease area and ability to develop expertise across multiple disease areas.
- Knowledge of information/technology systems is preferred.
- Strong computer skills (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.) are preferred.
- Work experience in a Managed Markets setting is preferred.
- Work experience in health economics and outcomes research is preferred.
Physical Requirements
- 50-75% overnight travel required.
- Position is field-based and can be located anywhere in the United States.
- Must maintain a valid driver’s license and be in good standing by not exceeding Novo Nordisk’s points threshold based on Motor Vehicle Records review.
Pay
The base compensation range for this position is $235,000 to $285,000. Base compensation is determined based on several factors. This position is also eligible for a company bonus based on individual and company performance. Novo Nordisk offers long-term incentive compensation and/or company vehicles depending on the position's level or other company factors.
