Responsibilities

  • Provides supervision, training, and education to DOC assigned library staff and inmate workers in all phases of circulating libraries: computerized circulation, inventory control, cataloging, book repair and protection, and recordkeeping.
  • Ensures compliance with court mandated guidelines by evaluating, selecting, and purchasing legal materials for inmates.
  • Provides direct services to inmates in Special Housing Unit, Close Custody Unit, Residential Treatment Unit, Infirmary and Transitional Work Centers, ensuring they have access to the library.
  • Evaluates, selects, and purchases a wide range of books, magazines, and newspapers to provide inmates with adequate, updated, recreational reading material.
  • Evaluates, selects, and purchases a wide variety of supplies necessary for the effective day-to-day operation of the library.
  • Keeps accurate records of all material that enters, circulates, or leaves the library to minimize loss and maximize accountability.
  • Daily schedules a large number of inmates requesting library use to make maximum use of library space and available time.
  • Maintains appropriate appearance, verbal interaction, and demeanor while fulfilling and carrying out responsibilities.
  • Performs additional duties and/or assignments as determined by NH DOC and/or the Corrections Special School District administration, including high school equivalency classroom instruction.

Qualifications

  • Equivalent combination of 4 years of education and experience after completion of high school, with 1 year in a supervisory or management level position in a related field.
  • Valid driver’s license and access to transportation statewide.
  • Appropriately certified, or eligible for certification through a statement of eligibility, by the NH State Department of Education’s Certification Office in Library Media Specialist #0036 or Library Coordinator #0035.
