Mechanical Field Engineer (On-site: Spartanburg Data Center)

About the role

This role is on-site in Spartanburg, SC. As a field mechanical engineer, you will work on projects that enable the heart of our client’s data center site. You and other team members will collaborate closely with client owners in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. The role involves supporting projects of varying size and complexity, including system assessments, consulting system owners, and analyzing scope requests from stakeholders.

You will interact with the client, contractors, and site personnel to design, develop, evaluate, and prepare recommendations, basis of design (BOD), scope of work (SOW) documents, and construction specifications. You will oversee engineering and construction for facility mechanical systems, including HVAC, chilled water systems, technical coolant systems, fire protection, plumbing, process-piping, and equipment. The work includes retrofits of existing building systems as well as new systems.

Responsibilities

• Review vendor submittal packages against client requirements and specifications.
• Interact with subcontractors and construction personnel.
• Perform field inspections and audits to verify compliance with contract documents, construction drawings, industry standards, and safety regulations.
• Review and interpret project specifications, drawings, RFIs, and submittals to ensure adherence to quality requirements.
• Track and document non-conformance reports (NCRs) and oversee corrective actions to resolve quality issues.
• Collaborate with contractors, subcontractors, and project teams to enforce quality standards and resolve issues.
• Oversee and inspect construction activities to verify workmanship, alignment, and adherence to project requirements.
• Support pre-installation meetings, punch lists, and final inspections to ensure project milestones are met.
• Maintain up-to-date knowledge of safety regulations and industry best practices.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET-accredited university.
• At least 3 years of practical application of mechanical facilities design engineering, including HVAC, hydronics, process piping, exhaust, plumbing, and related mechanical facilities systems.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Strong organizational skills, ability to prioritize, and leadership experience.
• Solid knowledge and application of building codes and related standards (ASHRAE, ASME, etc.).
• Solid knowledge of specifications and selection of all types of mechanical equipment and components.
• Proficient working knowledge of design software, such as AutoCAD, Revit, and Autodesk Construction Cloud (ACC).
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Forward-thinking, eager to learn best practices, and contribute with innovative ideas.
• Passionate about buildings and construction.

Qualifications

• EIT or Professional Engineer (PE) licensure (preferred).
• 5 years of experience working on-site or as a facility engineer (preferred).
• Working knowledge of design-related deliverables, such as P&IDs, PFDs, details, and equipment plans.
• Proficiency with industry-standard HVAC load and energy modeling software such as Carrier HAP, Trane Trace 700, or Trane Trace 3D.
• Experience coordinating work packages with contractors/subcontractors.

Schedule

This is an on-site position requiring work Monday–Friday during normal business hours (nominally 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM).

Physical Requirements

• Field visits and walks at an active client site in various stages of construction.
• Ability to walk long distances, sit and stand for extended periods, bend, stoop, twist, crawl, climb ladders, work on catwalks, and work in small spaces.
• Lift and carry up to 25 lbs.

Pay

The base salary range for this position is $69,500.00 to $121,500.00. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
