About the role

You will serve as a MECHANICAL ENGINEER in the Surface Ship Non-Propulsion Piping Waterfront Support Branch (CODE 267), FLUID/MECH ENGRG & PLANNING DIV (CODE 260), Engineering and Planning Department (CODE 200) of NORFOLK NAVAL SHIPYARD.

Responsibilities

  • Help You will be responsible for consistency in system design between ships in each class and for the technical adequacy and safety on non-propulsion piping.
  • Help Demonstrate design experience and technical knowledge of engineering aspects unique to nuclear powered aircraft carriers and working knowledge of special interface and control requirements associated with ship engineering and design work.
  • Help Serve as a technical working leader and perform professional engineering services directly related to achieving the objectives of the branch.
  • Help Evaluate and apply the latest developments and techniques in solving unique or difficult problems without traditional or treatable methods.

Requirements

  • Conditions of employment You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.

  • Conditions of employment You will be required to obtain and maintain a U.S. Passport.
  • Conditions of employment You will be required to complete training, obtain, and maintain a government credit card for travel and travel-related purchases.
  • Conditions of employment This position requires rotating shift work.

Qualifications

  • Specialized experience must demonstrate the following:
    • Experience applying knowledge of related engineering fields such as electrical and structural to a degree which will permit technical understanding and communicating when interfacing with personnel of other engineering discipline.
    • Experience with special interface and control requirements associated with total ship/system engineering and design work, nuclear propulsion plants cognizant compartments, systems and components, and secondary containment boundaries.
    • Experience furnishing engineering design services for the technical adequacy, accuracy and timely execution and resolution of problems involving nuclear and non-nuclear systems equipment and components.
    • Experience performing engineering analysis and calculations associated with project design to provide aspects unique to nuclear aircraft carrier auxiliary/non-propulsion piping components.
    • Experience utilizing working knowledge of special interface and control requirements associated with accomplishment of total ship/system engineering and design work.
  • Education Successful completion of a professional engineering degree.
  • Education Evidence of having successfully passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination or any other written test required for professional registration by an engineering licensure board in the various States, the District of Columbia, Guam, and Puerto Rico.
  • Education Successful completion of a curriculum leading to a bachelor's degree in an appropriate scientific field, e.g., engineering technology, physics, chemistry, architecture, computer science, mathematics, hydrology, or geology, may be accepted in lieu of a bachelor's degree in engineering, provided the applicant has had at least one year of professional engineering experience acquired under professional engineering supervision and guidance.
