About the role

The Iowa City office of Shive-Hattery is seeking a Mechanical Engineer with 7+ years of experience to join our Higher Education practice. Founded in 1895, Shive-Hattery is a premier architecture and engineering consulting firm with 16 offices across the US.

Responsibilities

  • Delve into the intricacies of designing complex utility systems, including steam, chilled water, ventilation, fire protection, plumbing, and building automation systems.
  • Collaborate with mechanical team members and across various disciplines such as electrical, structural, architectural, and civil engineering.
  • Apply expertise to diverse projects in government facilities, healthcare, industrial, commercial, and educational buildings.
  • Create detailed construction drawings using Autodesk Revit 3D modeling software.
  • Become proficient with software for hydraulic modeling and pipe stress analysis.
  • Visit project sites to collect measurements, data, and observe construction activities.
  • Lead projects and build client relationships based on your passion and leadership.

Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Architectural Engineering from an accredited engineering school with a specific emphasis on energy and utilities.
  • Experience: 7+ years of experience.
  • Licenses/Certifications: Engineering Intern (EI) having passed the Fundamentals of Engineering exam and currently pursuing a Professional Engineering (PE) license.
  • Driver’s License and access to a vehicle.
  • Climb ladders and work on elevated platforms and open grating.
  • Pass drug and background screenings required for work at most client sites.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proficiency in 3D modeling software, particularly AutoDesk Revit.
  • Desired but not required: Experience with Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Strong collaboration and interpersonal skills.
  • Effective communication, both oral and written.
  • Time management and task prioritization skills.
