Mechanical Engineer
About the role
The Mechanical Engineer will support the design, build, installation, and start-up of mechanical systems used in Corning's manufacturing plants. This position supports cross-functional project teams from concept generation and development through detailed design, build, system integration, and production start-up in manufacturing.
Responsibilities
- Work with project team members to solve difficult mechanical engineering and equipment-related problems, resolve project-related issues, and develop a basic understanding of process and equipment design requirements.
- Focus on the design, debug, installation, and start-up of mechanical systems, while developing understanding in areas such as material selection, error budgets, tolerance analysis, component specification, process requirements, and machine functionality.
- Absorb and apply knowledge in areas such as material selection, error budgets, tolerance analysis, component specification, process requirements, and machine functionality.

- Assist with proof-of-concept and prototype testing to validate design concepts.
- Work with external engineering firms, equipment vendors, system integrators, and suppliers to deliver assigned responsibilities on time, on budget, and in support of process performance requirements.
- Actively participate in system integration, debug, installation, production start-up, and training of plant personnel.
- Report project activities, status, and issues on a periodic basis to project and department leadership.
- Execute project assignments in a team-based, highly matrixed environment with minimal supervision.
Requirements
- B.S. in Mechanical Engineering with 0 to 2 years of Mechanical Engineering experience.
- High level of technical curiosity that enables unique solutions to technical challenges in the role, along with the interest and ability to learn, develop, and advance technical skills in mechanical design, process equipment development, and other mechanical systems.
- Fundamental understanding of materials, process, and mechanical design to support the development of cost-effective mechanical systems.
- Familiarity with engineering principles in areas such as mechanical design, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, electro-mechanical drive systems, fluid power, pneumatics, robotics, material handling, alignment, part sensing, and safety standards.
- Ability to use experimentation to develop basic process knowledge, design prototype test systems, and perform proof-of-principle testing to validate design approaches.
- Ability to effectively leverage and manage external engineering firms, equipment vendors, system integrators, and suppliers.
- Demonstrated skills in 2D and 3D CAD, and other engineering software packages.
- Ability to work in a team-based environment and contribute to a highly matrixed project team.
- Self-starter able to satisfy objectives and timelines with minimal supervision.
- Sound problem-solving and decision-making skills.
- Results-oriented with a high commitment level.
Qualifications
- Entrepreneurial Forward looking Knowledge of glass and ceramic manufacturing.
- Experience with SolidWorks and AutoCAD design software.
- Experience with standard computer modeling and analysis software packages used in the design of mechanical systems.

Pay
$69,279.00 - $95,259.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education.
