Mechanical Design Engineer (R&D Engineer 4)
About the Role
The Accelerator Operations and Technology (AOT) Division provides leadership in the Laboratory's core capability of Accelerators and Electrodynamics. Accelerators and Electrodynamics enables charged particle acceleration through controlled utilization of electromagnetic fields, supporting National Security missions involving radiographic imaging, remote measurements of electromagnetic signatures, and development of new capabilities. AOT operates the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE) proton accelerator complex and conducts applied research and development in accelerator-focused technologies as they apply to Free Electron Lasers, National Security Science programs, and future accelerator missions.
The Mechanical Design Engineering Group (AOT-MDE) supports division goals through design, analysis, and maintenance of accelerator components and systems, including cooling water systems, vacuum systems, electromagnets, and electromechanical diagnostic devices. AOT-MDE is seeking a strongly self-motivated and experienced Mechanical Engineer (R&D Engineer 4) to support ongoing projects and the LANSCE Modernization Project (LAMP). This role involves the design and analysis of structural and thermohydraulic systems, often culminating in experimental validation, with proficiency in CAD tools essential.
Responsibilities
- Lead and contribute to high-impact R&D projects through design, analysis, prototyping, fabrication, and documentation.
- Execute project deliverables while meeting technical, schedule, and performance objectives.
- Design and analyze structural and thermohydraulic systems for accelerator components and ancillary systems.
- Read and interpret engineering drawings drafted using ASME Y14.5 standards.
- Utilize CAD and CAM software, specifically SolidWorks, for design and analysis.
- Perform hands-on repairs, maintenance, and new installations along the LANSCE beam line.
- Collaborate effectively with scientists, engineers, and technicians.
- Adhere to safety and security protocols, including working in radiation areas under ALARA principles.
- Lead teams and manage project deliverables to meet technical, schedule, and performance goals.
- Apply knowledge of machining, welding techniques, and high-performance CAD/CAE software (e.g., SolidWorks, ANSYS).
Requirements
- Master's Degree in Engineering from an accredited institution and 12 years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A Ph.D. may be preferred.
- Proven track record of leading R&D projects through all phases, from design to documentation.
- Experience with CAD and CAM software, specifically SolidWorks.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings using ASME Y14.5 standards.
- Strong work ethic with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Willingness to perform hands-on work, including repairs and installations in radiation areas.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Knowledge of linear accelerator operation, configuration, and components.
- In-depth knowledge of machining, welding techniques, and high-performance CAD/CAE software (e.g., SolidWorks, ANSYS).
- Ability to acquire Q clearance (U.S. citizenship required except in rare circumstances).
Desired Qualifications
- Extensive experience in the design and analysis of linear accelerator components, operations, and configuration management.
- Experience with the full R&D project lifecycle, including requirements generation, validation, verification, prototyping, and testing.
- Active Q clearance.
Work Environment
This position has the potential for remote work, defined as working offsite greater than 2 hours from the Laboratory location. Periodic onsite reporting may be required. The work location is at the discretion of management. Regular appointment employees must serve a 1-year commitment in their current position to be eligible for other Laboratory jobs.
