This opportunity resides with Global Security (GS) within HII’s Mission Technologies division. The Global Security group delivers live, virtual, and constructive (LVC) solutions; fleet sustainment; nuclear and environmental services; and international business support. About the role

HII is seeking a skilled Mechanic-3 to support the Commander, U.S. Fleet Forces (COMUSFLTFORCOM) Berthing and Messing Program. This program operates duty crew berthing barges that provide essential living and working spaces for crews during ship overhaul and repair periods. As a Mechanic 3, you will perform organizational-level (O-Level) maintenance and repairs, installing, operating, troubleshooting, and maintaining shipboard and auxiliary systems aboard U.S. Navy berthing barges (APL). The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, safety-focused, and experienced in marine, industrial, or shipyard environments.

Responsibilities

• Install, operate, troubleshoot, and maintain shipboard and auxiliary systems on U.S. Navy berthing barges (APL).
• Perform corrective actions, replace faulty components, and return systems to service with minimal downtime.
• Read and interpret OEM manuals, NAVSEA Standard Items, and technical drawings.
• Troubleshoot faults on a variety of shipboard and auxiliary systems.
• Adhere to OSHA, shipyard, and Navy safety practices, including LOTO, confined space entry, fall protection, and proper use of PPE.

Requirements

• High school diploma, trade school certification, or equivalent.
• Minimum of 4 years of related experience in a marine, industrial, or shipyard environment.
• Strong multi-trade mechanical background in plumbing, pipefitting, basic electrical, or shipboard systems repair.
• Ability to provide own hand tools as designated per trade specialty.
• Familiarity with OSHA-10/30, shipyard, and Navy safety practices (LOTO, confined space, fall protection, PPE).

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience supporting U.S. Navy berthing barges (APL), afloat platforms, or other U.S. Naval platforms.
• Knowledge of NAVSEA drawings/specifications and shipyard practices.
• Experience with primary and auxiliary shipboard systems.

Physical & Safety Requirements

• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, climb ladders, and work in confined spaces aboard barges and in shipyard/industrial environments.
• Must consistently wear required PPE (hard hat, safety glasses, gloves, safety boots, fall protection).
• Adherence to program safety training and briefings.

Schedule

• Regular schedule: Monday–Friday, 0700–1530.
• Overtime, weekends, and federal holidays may be required for urgent or emergency work.
• Travel: 10–20% for periodic site inspections and coordination in Hampton Roads, VA and Groton/New London, CT.

Pay

Anticipated salary range: $47,049.00 – $57,200.00.
