About the role

The Marine Welder/Fitter will support HII Platform Modernization (PM) trades teams, working on active-class surface ships to perform alterations and installations for fleet modernization. This role involves various welding processes, mechanical techniques, and related duties to remove, install, and upgrade industrial equipment. Selected candidates will travel to shipyards and military bases across the U.S. and abroad, with per diem and travel/lodging expenses covered by the company. Candidates must pass an X-ray qualification test within the first three weeks of employment to demonstrate welding proficiency.

Responsibilities

• Support trades teams on active-class surface ships for alterations and installations as part of fleet modernization.
• Perform work in accordance with established quality and safety procedures.
• Execute a variety of tasks, both routine and non-routine, related to shipboard maintenance across company, customer, or field locations.
• Work from blueprints, engineering sketches, charts, or work orders to fabricate, maintain, repair, and modify structural elements and equipment.
• Lay out and mark points/lines on parts or subassemblies using tools like rules, squares, scribes, or templates.
• Cut, fit, assemble, and position pieces for welding using jigs, holding fixtures, and existing structures with hand and powered tools.
• Apply welding processes (SMAW, FCAW, GMAW) to join, surface, fabricate, and repair metal and other weldable materials.
• Work with technical documents, including controlled work packages, formal procedures, test documents, and reports.
• Maintain effective communication and provide reports to team and senior management.
• Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of quality control procedures to ensure accuracy, compliance, and workmanship.
• Follow and enforce safety procedures in all work environments.

Requirements

• Must demonstrate welding ability through X-ray qualification testing within the first three weeks of employment.
• U.S. citizenship required.
• High school diploma or equivalent, plus 4 years of related experience welding aboard naval vessels; trade school or technical certifications preferred.
• Ability to obtain medical clearance for half-face respirator use.
• Experience with stick welding (SMAW), Flux Core (FCAW), and Aluminum MIG (GMAW) in all positions (2G to 6G).
• Ability to read and interpret drawings, blueprints, weldments, technical manuals, engineering sketches, and work orders.
• Proficiency in reading welding symbols and measuring devices to 1/16 of an inch.
• Willingness to work outside of trade-specific tasks to support team projects.
• Applied knowledge of quality control procedures for fabrication and equipment operation.
• Experience working in a team environment with strong communication skills.
• Must provide hand tools and trade-specific PPE.
• Ability to travel up to 75% when not assigned to local tasks.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with TIG welding pipe.
• Current or prior welding certificates applicable to MIL-STD-248.
• Completion of a vocational school or skilled trades certificate program.
• OSHA 10 Maritime Certificate.
• Current security clearance.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to lift and carry heavy equipment and boxes (minimum 30 lbs).
• Able to work on ladders, in extreme temperatures, aboard ships, in shipyards, and in confined or industrial spaces.
• Capable of working in high heat, humidity, noise, and dirty conditions, including working aloft or over vessel sides.
• May require wearing a respirator and riding ships at sea for extended periods.
• Travel within and outside the continental U.S. may be required.

Pay

Anticipated salary range: $44,808.00 – $55,000.00.

Schedule

• Full-time, non-exempt position.
• Required travel: 51% – 75%, with per diem provided based on location.
