Mechanic II: Automotive Transportation

Essential Duties/Responsibilities

• Completes repair maintenance work on school system vehicles and equipment.
• Conducts vehicle safety and preventative maintenance inspections.
• Utilizes computerized diagnostic equipment in determining service requirements.
• Repairs and/or replaces necessary units and related parts including brakes, cooling systems, fuel systems, and exhaust systems.
• Repair and overhaul front and rear axle assemblies.
• Repairs most types of tires.
• Fuels buses as necessary.
• Responds to service and accident calls on disabled and damaged school system buses.
• Responds to any emergency situations as they arise.
• Practices safe work habits involving self and others.
• Maintains a clean, organized, and productive work area.
• Maintains inventory and work orders using a computer system.
• Provides own basic tools of the trade.
• May be required to furnish own transportation, as necessary.
• Performs other related duties as assigned within the same classification or lower.

Minimum Qualifications

• Completion of a recognized apprenticeship in the trade with experience as a journeyman and required; possession of an appropriate and valid Maryland Motor Vehicle operator’s license (Commercial Driver’s license with airbrakes and passenger endorsement, school bus endorsement with 5 or fewer current points, with no more than three (2) points resulting from traffic violations occurring while operating a Board of Education vehicle).
• Or an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities deemed sufficient to prepare the applicant to successfully perform the duties of the position.
