About the Role

Under general supervision of the Vehicle/Equipment Repair Supervisor, the employee performs skilled mechanical duties in the maintenance and repair of Agency fleet and equipment, maintains required documentation, and drives a school bus as needed.

Responsibilities

• Repairs/replaces major component parts (alternator, hydraulics, hubs, brake shoes, etc.) by restoring components to OEM specifications.
• Performs all functions necessary to maintain fleet in excellent operating condition.
• Evaluates and diagnoses mechanical/electrical problems.
• Notifies supervisor of any major mechanical issues outside the scope of work.
• Assists the Vehicle/Equipment Repair Supervisor in ensuring compliance with Federal, State, Agency, and Departmental policies, procedures, rules, and regulations (e.g., DHEC, DOE, DMV, DOT, State Fleet).
• Performs annual bus inspections per SDE requirements and maintains documentation to verify timely inspections.
• Maintains proper credentials for inspecting buses.
• Attends required training sessions related to job duties.
• Responds to on-call situations as needed.
• Uses best judgment to determine the best course of action, ensuring decisions align with State and Agency interests with safety as the primary focus.

Requirements

• Three years of mechanical experience in automotive-related repair or an equivalent combination of training and experience for both gasoline and diesel engines.
• Must maintain a current SC CDL, School Bus Certificate, and DOT Card or be able to acquire these certifications within 120 calendar days of hire.
• Working knowledge of the mechanical repair of gasoline and diesel engines.
• Must possess or be able to acquire necessary SDE certifications and ASE Refrigerant Recovery and Recycling certification.
• Ability to perform all work in compliance with Federal, State, Agency, Safety, and Environmental policies and procedures using required personal protective equipment.
• Working knowledge of supply procedures and the ability to interpret technical service manuals and/or software.
