MBM Vice Chair

The Sanford School of Medicine is seeking applications for a Vice Chair for Research within the Family Medicine Department. This position reports to Dr. Jacob Prunuske, MD, Chair, Family Medicine.

Expectations

• Provide strategic vision for research within the Family Medicine department.
• Develop, support, and sustain research infrastructure and capacity within the Family Medicine department.
• Create and support a culture of scholarship, curiosity, and academic writing within the department.
• Provide guidance and development opportunities for faculty scholars.
• Provide guidance for medical student research projects.
• Collaborate with the Center for Rural Health Innovation, and others within the department, to increase scholarly productivity.
• Maintain an individual program of research independent of the vice-chair role.
• Maintain familiarity with school-wide educational goals for students as outlined in the Pillar handbooks.
• Collaborate with educational leaders to support medical student research relevant to family medicine.
• Demonstrate strong interpersonal and leadership skills with students, staff, and faculty.
• Collaborate effectively with the Family Medicine department chair.

Expected Productivity/Administration

• Develop, implement, and maintain a departmental strategic plan for research.
• Develop annual goals aligned with the departmental strategic plan.
• Engage with other departments, schools, institutions, and organizations to support collaborative primary care research.
• Attend and present at relevant regional and national professional meetings.
• Develop and sustain collaborative research partnerships with regional health systems.
• Build capacity for and support the growth of departmental grant activity and external research funding.
• Recruit family medicine researchers to the department.
• Regularly attend department faculty meetings.
• Participate in department and School of Medicine committees.

Qualifications

• MD, DO or PhD
• USD experience preferred
• Have or ability to obtain a faculty appointment with SSOM

Schedule

This is a temporary, 12-month appointment at 20% effort. First review of applications will begin September 23, 2026, and continue until the position is filled.

Working Conditions

The primary function of this position is performed in a clinical environment.
