Materials Handler

About the role

Performs day-to-day activities in the receipt, storage, maintenance and issue of stock and non-stock materials. Establishes and maintains effective relationships with customers.

Responsibilities

• Recognizes safety hazards and follows safety guidelines for personal protection, protection of fellow workers and the protection of the public.
• Knowledge of procedures for purchasing, receiving, storing, maintaining, and issuing material.
• Receives material from vendors and common carriers by unloading trucks and inspects material for discrepancies.
• Checks material for quantity, physical condition, weight, and capacity.
• Arranges own transportation to work location and may be reassigned to another location at the Company’s discretion.
• Knowledge of the “Systems Applications Program” (SAP) with ability to perform computer entry and inquiries to assist with customer needs.
• Manages Tool Room, disbursement and tracking of issued tools/equipment, repairs and restocking of replacement tools/equipment.
• Manages hazardous material handling procedures.
• Operates Company vehicles and equipment (e.g., forklift, plant vehicles, etc.) and maintains operating licenses and certifications (TDL required).
• Obtains, with training and experience, a CDL Class A license, DOT HAZMAT certification, etc., for making deliveries with a tractor/trailer if required.
• Inspects and maintains material handling equipment and machinery.
• Transports material between warehouses and site locations and maintains logs.
• Works in a team environment and influences others toward action or a particular point of view.
• Accepts responsibility for crew activities and accomplishes work with little or no supervision.
• Uses a personal computer and associated software to perform warehouse activities.
• Monitors and recommends changes to OSSQ and reorder codes for warehouse location.
• Assumes duties of Head Material Handler when assigned.
• Performs analysis and runs Ad-hoc reports as needed.
• Creates releases, prepares and ships material to vendor for repair; stores and maintains pending repair material.
• Arranges and ships hazardous materials to other locations, prepares documents and maintains logs.
• Manages Open Stock and Tool Room programs.
• Prepares discrepant receivable reports and processes material return authorization for discrepant material.
• Assists Plant personnel in maintaining gasoline inventory.
• Coordinates the collection and disposition of all scrap metal, wire, wood, lead, and copper.
• Expedites material as required.
• Maintains inventory records and completes inventory reconciliation.
• Coordinates inspections and maintains inspection logs and documentation.
• Manages commodities with limited Shelf-Life guidelines.
• Manages stocks of bottled and specialty gases for labs, plants, and warehouse.
• Coordinates the rubber goods exchange program.
• Performs quality control tasks.
• Provides customer service functions for external and internal clients.
• Identifies and corrects discrepancies in material and material storage.
• Performs inventory audits and makes adjustments.
• Performs housekeeping duties as required.

Requirements

• High School Diploma, GED or equivalent knowledge of English (both written and spoken), mathematics and grammar.
• Three (3) years of progressive experience in a material handler role.

Skills

• Knowledge of common power plant materials.
• Ability to work in mentally stressful environments and react to crises where immediate action is required.
• Ability to discern and respond to verbal and auditory signals.
• Ability to discern assorted colors.

Physical Requirements

• Works in a power plant environment both inside and outside in all temperatures and climate conditions in accordance with Heat Stress procedures.
• Works around large rotating equipment, energized electrical equipment in high noise areas, and/or in confined places, on elevations in excess of 250 feet, or from platforms at heights of 5 feet or greater.
• Climbs stairways, ladders, and works from aerial devices.
• Prepared to work irregular or rotating shifts and respond to emergency callout 7 days a week, 24 hours a day.
• Performs tasks by walking, standing, sitting, kneeling, crouching, squatting, twisting, pushing, pulling, shoveling, climbing, and working with hand tools (up to 25 pounds) in positions above and below head, and extended from body.
• Lifts, carries, positions and uses tools and/or equipment (weighing up to 50 lbs.) in awkward positions, swings various weights of sledge hammers, stoops and bends to reach valves, pulls on chain-falls or come-a-longs.
• Twists the body and neck while driving company vehicles or operating company equipment.
• Performance of duties may cause frequent jarring of the body.
• Works with and around hazardous and non-hazardous materials (reference the waste management guidance manual).
• Must be able to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) as required (e.g., steel-toed boots, respirators, goggles, safety glasses).
