The primary role of each full-time employee in the Student Connection and Leadership Center is to encourage, facilitate, orchestrate, and support student efforts to fulfill the Student Connection and Leadership Center Vision and Mission, which center around: integrity, skill and talent development, inclusion, service, Christ-centered leadership, and student-focused experiences. The Marketing Coordinator has primary responsibility for the BYUSA marketing area volunteers and student employees in the Center, including mentoring, training, and providing policy and procedure education. Purpose and objectives are achieved by providing oversight in a developmental environment, establishing appropriate policies, conducting assessment of programs, and reporting plans, progress, and results to the direct supervisor.

The Marketing Coordinator is accountable to the director for all actions, programs, and student engagement of the BYUSA Marketing Area and other associated department responsibilities as assigned. All work must align with BYU and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, BYU Mission, BYU Aims, and BYU Strategic Objectives. Proper alignment includes intentionality in building faith, a commitment to a campus culture of unity, love, and belonging, and exemplary conduct that combines spiritual values and personal integrity.

The essential functions of this position require in-person work on campus during established and regular office hours to provide services to BYU students, staff, administrators, and the campus community. Event days may require physical exertion, extended periods of walking and standing, and enduring variable weather conditions. This position may also require work on nights and weekends to support student services and department objectives.

Responsibilities

Program Management

  • Oversee marketing efforts with the BYUSA area and Center programs.
  • Manage all Center-specific signage and marketing of Vision and Mission efforts.
  • Prepare marketing style guides.
  • Create, develop, and refine evaluation and assessment tools, including an area purpose statement and objectives, to measure efforts in fulfilling the department Vision and Mission.
  • Define volunteer involvement opportunities and develop effective recruitment strategies, including collaborative efforts.
  • Direct budget allocations, experience design and management, and work distribution of the marketing area.
  • Ensure accuracy and relevancy of data and conclusions gathered through evaluation and assessment.
  • Promote and support innovation and technology to improve programming efficacy and efficiency.
  • Provide event/activity oversight, including experience design, volunteer involvement, scheduling, budgeting, staffing, risk management, equipment, AV support, crowd control, evaluation, administrative approval, ticketing, marketing, and promotion.

Student Development

  • Conduct performance evaluations with student employees to offer and solicit feedback.
  • Create meaningful connections between the Student Connection and Leadership Center Vision and Mission, program objectives, and student efforts.
  • Facilitate increased student involvement, leadership opportunities, progression, and decision-making accountability.
  • Mentor students through the design and marketing process and the administrative environment at BYU.
  • Provide mentorship, guidance, direction, and instruction to the BYUSA marketing area team.
  • Provide oversight for student involvement in the budgeting and purchasing process.
  • Scaffold a student experience that allows for spiritual, professional, and character development (e.g., oral and written communication; evaluation, assessment, and implementation skills; problem-solving; experience design and management skills; religious convictions; increased awareness of strengths; goal setting and attainment).
  • Teach and model the Student Connection and Leadership Center Vision and Mission to student volunteers, leaders, and employees.
  • Train students on the creation, analysis, and utilization of data.
  • Train students on creating, organizing, and executing effective focus groups, surveys, and other data collection instruments.
  • Train, teach, supervise, and direct the work of student employees.

Department Responsibilities

  • Conduct macro and micro evaluations of department, area, and program efforts to assess inclusivity and ability to meet the needs of the collective student body.
  • Create, modify, and maintain online content for the department website.
  • Develop, maintain, and execute an evaluation, assessment, and implementation plan to measure progress against area/program purpose and objectives and inform future efforts.
  • Foster and maintain relationships with college, department, and administrative connections.
  • Maintain the integrity of the department budgeting, finance, and purchasing process.
  • Monitor all media and print content to ensure alignment with university values and standards.
  • Create and implement policies and procedures for print, website, and social media content.
  • Create, develop, maintain, refine, and innovate systems and processes for graphic design, photography, videography, social media, and online platforms generated in the BYUSA marketing area.

Workgroups, Committees, & Assignments

  • Serve in department, division, and campus assignments as needed.
  • Attend monthly Campus Communicators Committee meetings.
  • Serve on 1-2 of the following workgroups or committees:
    • Employee ROAR (Recruitment, Orientation, Appreciation, Retention) workgroup
    • Evaluation, Assessment, & Implementation workgroup
    • Volunteer ROAR workgroup

Professional Development

  • Investigate and participate in professional skills development and student affairs knowledge acquisition, including presenting at conferences, workshops, and seminars, and serving in professional organizations.
  • Meet weekly with supervisor to report, problem-solve, collaborate, and receive direction and instruction.
  • Remain current and relevant in the field with ongoing professional development support.

Requirements

  • A firm commitment to the mission of BYU.
  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • 1 year of student affairs, marketing, or related field experience in higher education.
  • Ability to collaborate, cooperate, and establish dialogue with campus administrators, faculty members, and departments.
  • Ability to connect Student Connection and Leadership Center and BYUSA clubs activities, events, and efforts to experiential learning.
  • Ability to connect with, relate to, and establish appropriate boundaries with university students.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree related to Student Affairs, Marketing, or a related field.
  • 3+ years of student affairs, marketing, or related field experience in higher education.
  • Ability to navigate challenges and opportunities when creating an inclusive environment, considering background, culture, ethnicity, life experience, and perspective.
  • Advanced technical and computer skills in website design, graphic design, coding, statistical software, etc.
  • Experience with evaluation, assessment, and implementation.
  • Knowledge of, and ability to operationalize, student development and student affairs theories and best practices.
  • Knowledge of, and ability to operationalize, theories, strategies, and best practices in branding, marketing, and public relations.
  • Research and operationalize student affairs and student development news, trends, academic publications, and best practices.
  • Teach and train holistic student affairs skills and practice, including advisement, teaching, facilitation, leadership and followership, and interpersonal communication.
  • Understanding of and ability to apply university policy and procedure.
  • Understanding of legal and liability issues related to department programs, events, and services and their ramifications for student participants, volunteers, and employees.
  • Understanding of marketing and finance principles.
