About the role

Responsible for leading a team of Underwriters on the delivery of profitable Commercial Lines risk selection by communicating underwriting vision and objectives, directing team operations, mentoring lower-level managers and team members, and communicating risk assessment best practices to align underwriting strategy with portfolio growth goals.

Responsibilities

  • Enhance the Commercial Lines Underwriting portfolio by measuring, analyzing, and communicating agency performance to ensure alignment with business strategy, retention of key partners, and acquisition of desired business.
  • Manage profitability by identifying, measuring, managing, and accounting for risks through a team of Underwriters to achieve business plan profit goals.
  • Recommend and implement business growth initiatives to achieve business plan goals.
  • Cultivate efficient team functioning by managing resources and recommending and implementing needed changes to fill gaps and ensure streamlined strategy execution.
  • Influence the team by modeling strong relationship-building with key stakeholders to encourage timely and effective communication and deliver personalized, quality service.
  • Build relationships and facilitate Commercial Lines projects by sharing expertise with peers and senior leaders, guiding product review/launch processes, leading agency and Underwriter training, resolving escalated issues, and monitoring agency-level impact of change to ensure department initiatives enhance the business.
  • Guide key stakeholder decision-making and understanding of operations by sharing underwriting technical expertise with the team, agents, and regulators, and clarifying complex escalated inquiries to transfer information and cultivate a strong department reputation.
  • Manage a performance enhancement culture by actively coaching and mentoring direct reports, providing regular feedback, and developing employees for wider roles and responsibilities to foster professional growth and development.
  • Manage budgeted resources by anticipating expenditures, accurately forecasting resource needs/costs, and properly accounting for expenses to meet requirements and achieve fiscal responsibility.
  • Provide a positive environment by modeling cultural expectations and guiding leaders to reward performance and value accountability, diversity and inclusion, flexibility, continuous improvement, collaboration, creativity, and fun.

  • Comply with agency management system data standards and data integrity (enter and maintain complete and accurate information).
  • Occasional travel (approximately 15% - 20% a year).
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ten (10) or more years of related work experience.
  • Extensive property and casualty insurance underwriting experience.
  • CPCU license.
  • Certificate of General Insurance (INS).
  • Associate in Insurance Production (AIP).

Skills

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Advanced working knowledge of commercial lines products and concepts, underwriting processes and procedures, laws and regulations related to area of responsibility, and terminology, concepts, and principles related to strategic planning.
  • Self-motivated, excellent attention to detail, and ability to multi-task while managing priorities.
  • Ability to adapt and be flexible in a complex, changing environment.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office products.
