Manager Structural Design

Liebherr Mining Equipment Newport News Co. is seeking a Manager Structural Design to lead the structural design team in the research, planning, and development of structural products and systems.

About the role

The Manager Structural Design ensures products meet cost targets, technical specifications, and project timelines while collaborating with cross-functional teams. This role involves supervising a team of 4 to 6 employees and applying company policies rigorously.

Responsibilities

• Designs structural products and systems, including welded fabrications, castings, and machined parts.
• Develops and coordinates project plans, ensuring timely and budget-compliant completion.
• Researches and analyzes customer design proposals, specifications, and manuals to determine design feasibility.
• Supports fabrication, installation, operation, maintenance, and repair activities to ensure compliance with engineering designs and customer specifications.
• Evaluates field installations and recommends design modifications to eliminate malfunctions.
• Works independently and collaboratively with engineers, designers, and production personnel.
• Forecasts department operating costs and contributes to budget preparation.
• Directly supervises employees, including hiring, training, performance appraisal, and conflict resolution.

Requirements

• Master of Science (M.S.) or Master of Engineering (M.E.) with 4+ years of engineering experience, or a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Mechanical or Structural Engineering with 10+ years of experience in heavy industrial equipment design.
• Minimum of 2 years of experience managing technical personnel.
• Proficiency in structural design engineering, finite element analysis, and material properties.
• Experience with database software, AutoCAD, Pro-Engineer, Microsoft Project, and MS Office.
• Knowledge of BaaN system for truck Bill of Material (BOM) structure and inventory control.
• Ability to interpret technical documents, schematics, and governmental regulations.
• Strong mathematical skills, including advanced concepts like exponents, logarithms, and statistical analysis.
• Ability to interpret instructions in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
• Up to 20% domestic and international travel required.
• Valid driver’s license and passport; ability to maintain MSHA certification.

Pay

$157,000 – $188,000 per year.
