Manager, Pharmacy Operations

About the role

The Pharmacy Manager is responsible for leading and advancing pharmacy operations, patient care services, medication-use systems, and professional practice initiatives within a complex acute care environment. This leader partners closely with pharmacy, nursing, medical staff, and information technology teams to ensure the delivery of safe, effective, efficient, equitable, and patient-centered medication management services. The Pharmacy Manager provides strategic and operational oversight for assigned service lines, including perioperative pharmacy services, medication-use processes, automation and technology platforms, regulatory compliance programs, quality improvement initiatives, and workforce development.

Responsibilities

• Ensure compliance with Joint Commission, ASHP, and other applicable regulatory and accreditation standards
• Develop, implement, and evaluate operational systems that support appropriate prescribing, preparation, distribution, administration, and monitoring of drug therapy while continuously identifying opportunities to improve patient outcomes, operational efficiency, and medication safety
• Lead departmental efforts related to automation optimization, workflow redesign, productivity management, and practice advancement
• Evaluate emerging technologies, assess the effectiveness of pharmacy programs and automation enhancements, and implement improvements that support organizational goals
• Serve as a key contributor to strategic planning, quality improvement initiatives, and the development of innovative pharmacy services aligned with the health system's mission and future needs
• Oversee the recruitment, onboarding, development, engagement, performance management, and retention of pharmacists, technicians, and support staff
• Foster a culture of accountability, professionalism, respect, innovation, and continuous improvement while coaching team members to achieve individual and organizational goals
• Oversee labor management, employee relations, competency assessment, scheduling practices, and workforce engagement initiatives
• Serve as a mentor, educator, and role model for pharmacists, technicians, residents, students, and interns
• Support residency and student training programs, promote scholarship and professional development, and advance a comprehensive pharmacy practice model that optimizes the roles of pharmacists and pharmacy technicians
• Actively participate in multidisciplinary committees, represent pharmacy on organizational initiatives, and may serve in the capacity of other pharmacy leadership roles as operational needs require

Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree in Pharmacy or Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree from an ACPE-accredited School of Pharmacy required
• Master of Science (MS) in Pharmacy Administration, Master of Business Administration (MBA), Master of Health Administration (MHA), or other relevant advanced degree preferred
• Completion of an ASHP-accredited PGY1 residency preferred
• PGY2 residency training in Health-System Pharmacy Administration, Pharmacy Practice, Medication-Use Safety, Critical Care, or other relevant specialty area preferred
• Current pharmacist licensure in the State of Maryland or eligibility for Maryland pharmacist licensure required
• Board of Pharmacy Specialties (BPS) certification, including Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist (BCPS), preferred
• Lean Six Sigma certification preferred
• Additional certifications related to quality improvement, project management, patient safety, or healthcare leadership are desirable
• Minimum of five (5) years of progressive hospital or health-system pharmacy experience required
• Minimum of three (3) years of health-system pharmacy leadership and management experience in a manager-level role required
• Demonstrated experience leading pharmacy operations, medication-use systems, and multidisciplinary teams in an acute care or integrated health-system environment
• Experience managing pharmacy personnel, employee engagement initiatives, labor productivity, performance management, recruitment, and staff development
• Experience with pharmacy automation, technology optimization, medication safety initiatives, and operational improvement projects preferred
• Experience overseeing sterile compounding, hazardous drug handling, perioperative pharmacy services, and regulatory compliance programs preferred
• Experience developing and implementing strategic initiatives, business plans, quality improvement programs, and operational performance metrics preferred
• Experience serving as a preceptor, mentor, or educator for pharmacy residents, students, and interns preferred

Skills

• Comprehensive knowledge of health-system pharmacy operations, medication-use systems, and pharmacy practice models
• Advanced understanding of Joint Commission, ASHP, ISMP, CMS, and other applicable regulatory and accreditation standards
• Strong leadership, coaching, and team development skills with a demonstrated ability to build high-performing teams and foster a culture of accountability and engagement
• Proven ability to lead change, manage complex projects, and implement strategic and operational initiatives across multiple practice areas
• Expertise in quality improvement methodologies, performance improvement, medication safety principles, and process redesign
• Strong financial acumen with experience managing labor resources, productivity, and operational efficiency
• Knowledge of pharmacy automation technologies, electronic health records, clinical information systems, and data analytics tools
• Exceptional analytical, problem-solving, decision-making, and organizational skills
• Strong written, verbal, presentation, and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to effectively engage frontline staff, physicians, executives, and interdisciplinary partners
• Ability to prioritize multiple demands, manage competing deadlines, and adapt effectively in a fast-paced healthcare environment
• Demonstrated commitment to patient-centered care, professional development, innovation, practice advancement, and continuous improvement
• Ability to effectively collaborate with pharmacy leadership, nursing leadership, medical staff, information technology teams, and other organizational stakeholders to achieve departmental and system goals

Dayshift; Provides leadership oversight for a 24-hour, 7-day-per-week acute care hospital pharmacy

Pay

Pay Range: $73.83-$117.93
