About the Role
The Nurse Manager (NM) is responsible for the management of nursing practice and operations on a designated unit/service setting such as inpatient, procedural, emergency department, or ambulatory care. This includes the management of clinical nursing practice, staff recruitment, retention, labor relations, supply chain and budget, daily staffing, employee performance evaluation, quality improvement, staff education, medical record documentation, compliance with internal and external regulatory agency requirements, and patient safety solution/corrective action plans.
The Nurse Manager collaborates with multiple professionals to support and coordinate the provision and management of patient care from admission through the discharge process. This individual works closely with the Nursing Director, unit Dyad partner, and staff to ensure the unit maintains the highest standards of patient care and is responsive to the needs of patients, families, and the organization.
Responsibilities
Patient Care
- Leads nursing practice using the tenets of the Professional Practice Model of Relationship Centered Care and the Care Delivery Model of Modified Primary Nursing to promote patient experience.
- Demonstrates proficiency in all aspects of Hourly Care Checks and role models expected behaviors; ensures integration into clinical activities to enhance Relationship Centered Care.
- Validates staff members' Hourly Care Checks on all patients through direct observation and patient feedback; assesses staff competency and provides consistent, meaningful feedback.
- Conducts daily rounding of identified patients (Monday-Friday) and weekly rounding on staff.
- Communicates quantitative and qualitative information regarding patient experience and staff engagement to the Interdisciplinary Patient Care Team to develop and implement action plans.
- Collaborates with the physician dyad and escalates concerns as appropriate; follows up on all patient concerns in a timely manner and provides service recovery as needed.
- Role models the tenets of Mount Sinai Relationship Centered Care (MSHRCC) by facilitating patient-centered care processes such as Admission/Visit Welcome, Bedside Shift Report, HELP, AM/PM Care, Dedicated Sit Down, Purposeful Hourly Rounding (PHR)/Care Checks, Medication Review, and Discharge Wrap Up.
- Participates and facilitates Communication Huddle with staff at the start of the shift, identifying high-risk patients and escalating concerns in a timely manner.
- Participates in Interdisciplinary Care Rounds or other structured team communications, supporting evidence-based practice for care delivery, LOS reductions, transition of care, and discharge planning.
- Collaborates with physicians, nursing, case management, OT/PT, pharmacy, and ancillary services to address patient care outcomes and barriers to safe, timely discharge.
- Initiates service recovery for patients and family members with concerns and escalates to Nursing Director/designee and Patient Relations as needed.
- Interprets and communicates patient experience scores and benchmarks; keeps staff informed of progress and areas of opportunity.
- Considers patient values, preferences, cultural diversity, expressed needs, and knowledge in all aspects of care.
- Empowers staff to use evidence-based practices to increase understanding of patients’ perceptions of care.
- Identifies Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) of Patient Experience and oversees progress through the Story Board performance improvement process within the Data Management Board (DMB).
Quality and Safety
- Plans, supports, and leads a safe, therapeutic, efficient, and patient-centered care environment that promotes professional nursing practice across inpatient, ambulatory, and procedural settings.
- Identifies and investigates issues or variances in practice/operations by participating in the RCA/Patient Safety Solutions (PSS) processes and implements corrective action plans/safety solutions.
- Partners with clinical and operational leaders to monitor quality, safety, and throughput metrics, using data to drive continuous improvement in length of stay and discharge processes.
- Participates in unit and hospital-based quality, patient safety, and patient experience process improvement initiatives.
- Utilizes the principles of Lean methodology for process improvement through the use of Daily Management Boards (DMB).
- Identifies KPIs for Quality and Safety with emphasis on nurse-sensitive indicators using the Story Board process within DMB.
- Fosters a fair and open Just Culture that encourages error and near-miss occurrence reporting.
- Leads interdisciplinary quality improvement teams using the principles of high reliability.
- Reviews unit progress, changes, and compliance with quality and safety metrics with clinical nurses and other members of the healthcare team.
- Responds to escalations of potential safety hazards or gaps from best practice by correcting concerns following institutional chain of command protocol.
- Monitors institutional information technology infrastructure and corrects gaps in clinical nursing documentation.
- Leads staff participation in quality and safety initiatives and mandated compliance measures.
- Demonstrates accountability for all unit quality and safety practices and compliance; ensures required evaluation of staff competencies is maintained.
Operations and Administration
- Supports the implementation of the mission, vision, goals, and objectives of the department across inpatient, ambulatory, and procedural care settings, ensuring alignment throughout the clinical service and patient care areas.
- Provides administrative and clinical oversight to ensure operational activities—including staffing, patient access and flow, support services, interdisciplinary collaboration, resource utilization, and financial stewardship—support organizational goals and high-quality patient care.
- Ensures compliance with all applicable staffing regulations, collective bargaining agreements, and regulatory requirements, including NYSDOH Staffing Committee Law and inpatient, procedural, and ambulatory staffing standards.
- Oversees patient care delivery and daily operations across assigned inpatient units and/or ambulatory practice areas, utilizing Leader Standard Work to ensure consistency in leadership practices, operational excellence, patient access, quality outcomes, and evidence-based best practices.
- Works collaboratively with the Center-led Staffing Department to ensure staffing grids are met and optimize workforce deployment.
- Supports labor management strategies by maximizing retention strategies and internal resource utilization while minimizing reliance on premium labor.
- Monitors staffing trends and workforce metrics, validating and implementing data-driven recommendations to support informed staffing decisions.
- Prioritizes recruitment and retention strategies in accordance with system and local hospital retention goals.
- Implements and monitors unit salary and supply budgets, including capital equipment allocation according to MSHS financial goals.
- Monitors availability and maintenance of nursing equipment and supplies.
- Maintains position control of established positions and manages the recruitment and retention of qualified staff.
- Maintains patient/employee confidentiality in the management of information.
- Evaluates nursing staff performance and mentors, coaches, counsels, and disciplines staff as needed.
- Evaluates all newly hired/transferred staff and participates in decisions about passing the probationary period.
- Participates in ongoing and completes annual performance appraisals for all staff; completes performance improvement plans as needed.
- Interprets and implements collective bargaining agreements and System and Hospital policies and procedures.
- Performs disciplinary actions as necessary in collaboration with Nursing and Labor Relations; acts as a management witness in disciplinary activities.
- Ensures all staff have met their orientation goals, weekly progress reports, and annual competency requirements; participates in the Competency Planning Tool for unit/service.
- Conducts regular staff meetings to communicate progress, changes, and compliance with all hospital policies and procedures; maintains records of minutes for staff team meetings.
- Encourages, recognizes, and rewards staff participation in quality and safety initiatives, compliance, and successes.
- Facilitates organizational change initiatives using effective strategies.
- Leads a shared decision-making model by establishing shared governance, just culture, and staff engagement in structured unit, procedural, or practice councils and departmental meetings.
- Responds to protest of assignment in a timely manner as detailed in the collective bargaining agreement and discusses resolutions in unit staff meetings.
- Ensures assigned inpatient units, ambulatory practices, and clinical departments maintain compliance with all applicable regulatory, accreditation, and professional practice standards, including those established by NYSDOH, The Joint Commission, and other governing agencies.
