About the Role
The Nurse Manager (NM) is responsible for the management of nursing practice and operations on a designated unit/service setting such as inpatient, procedural, emergency department, or ambulatory care. This includes overseeing clinical nursing practice, staff recruitment and retention, labor relations, supply chain and budget, daily staffing, employee performance evaluation, quality improvement, staff education, medical record documentation, compliance with regulatory requirements, and patient safety solutions.
The Nurse Manager collaborates with multiple professionals to support and coordinate patient care from admission through discharge. This individual works closely with the Nursing Director, unit Dyad partner, and staff to ensure the unit maintains the highest standards of patient care and is responsive to the needs of patients, families, and the organization.
Responsibilities
Patient Care
- Leads nursing practice using the Professional Practice Model of Relationship Centered Care and the Care Delivery Model of Modified Primary Nursing to promote patient experience.
- Demonstrates proficiency in Hourly Care Checks and role models expected behaviors; ensures integration into clinical activities and validates staff performance through direct observation and patient feedback.
- Conducts daily patient rounding (Monday-Friday) and weekly staff rounding.
- Communicates patient experience and staff engagement information to the Interdisciplinary Patient Care Team to develop and implement action plans.
- Collaborates with the physician dyad to escalate and address patient concerns in a timely manner, providing service recovery as needed.
- Role models Mount Sinai Relationship Centered Care (MSHRCC) by facilitating patient-centered processes such as admission welcome, bedside shift report, purposeful hourly rounding, medication review, and discharge wrap-up.
- Participates in and facilitates communication huddles at the start of shifts to identify high-risk patients and escalate concerns.
- Engages in Interdisciplinary Care Rounds to support evidence-based practice, length-of-stay reductions, transition of care, and discharge planning.
- Collaborates with physicians, nursing, case management, OT/PT, pharmacy, and ancillary services to address patient care outcomes and barriers to safe, timely discharge.
- Interprets and communicates patient experience scores and benchmarks, empowering staff to use evidence-based practices to improve patient perceptions of care.
- Oversees Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for patient experience using the Story Board performance improvement process within the Data Management Board (DMB).
Quality and Safety
- Plans, supports, and leads a safe, therapeutic, efficient, and patient-centered care environment across inpatient, ambulatory, and procedural settings.
- Identifies and investigates issues or variances in practice/operations by participating in Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and Patient Safety Solutions (PSS) processes; implements corrective action plans.
- Partners with clinical and operational leaders to monitor quality, safety, and throughput metrics, using data to drive continuous improvement in length of stay and discharge processes.
- Participates in unit and hospital-based quality, patient safety, and patient experience improvement initiatives.
- Utilizes Lean methodology for process improvement through Daily Management Boards (DMB).
- Identifies KPIs for quality and safety, emphasizing nurse-sensitive indicators using the Story Board process within DMB.
- Fosters a fair and open Just Culture that encourages error and near-miss reporting.
- Leads interdisciplinary quality improvement teams using principles of high reliability.
- Reviews unit progress, changes, and compliance with quality and safety metrics with clinical nurses and healthcare team members.
- Responds to escalations of potential safety hazards or gaps from best practice by correcting concerns following institutional chain of command protocol.
- Monitors institutional IT infrastructure and corrects gaps in clinical nursing documentation.
- Leads staff participation in quality and safety initiatives and mandated compliance measures; ensures evaluation of staff competencies.
Operations and Administration
- Supports the implementation of the department’s mission, vision, goals, and objectives across inpatient, ambulatory, and procedural care settings.
- Provides administrative and clinical oversight to ensure operational activities—including staffing, patient access and flow, support services, interdisciplinary collaboration, resource utilization, and financial stewardship—align with organizational goals.
- Ensures compliance with staffing regulations, collective bargaining agreements, and regulatory requirements, including NYSDOH Staffing Committee Law and applicable staffing standards.
- Oversees patient care delivery and daily operations using Leader Standard Work to ensure consistency in leadership practices, operational excellence, and evidence-based best practices.
- Collaborates with the Center-led Staffing Department to ensure staffing grids are met and optimize workforce deployment.
- Supports labor management strategies by maximizing retention and internal resource utilization while minimizing reliance on premium labor.
- Monitors staffing trends and workforce metrics, implementing data-driven recommendations for informed staffing decisions.
- Prioritizes recruitment and retention strategies in alignment with system and local hospital goals.
- Implements and monitors unit salary and supply budgets, including capital equipment allocation.
- Maintains availability and maintenance of nursing equipment and supplies.
- Manages position control, recruitment, and retention of qualified staff.
- Evaluates nursing staff performance, mentoring, coaching, counseling, and disciplining staff as needed.
- Evaluates newly hired/transferred staff and participates in probationary period decisions.
- Completes annual performance appraisals and performance improvement plans for staff.
- Interprets and implements collective bargaining agreements and system/hospital policies and procedures.
- Performs disciplinary actions as necessary in collaboration with Nursing and Labor Relations; acts as a management witness in disciplinary activities.
- Ensures staff meet orientation goals, weekly progress reports, and annual competency requirements; participates in the Competency Planning Tool.
- Conducts regular staff meetings to communicate progress, changes, and compliance with hospital policies; maintains records of meeting minutes.
- Encourages, recognizes, and rewards staff participation in quality, safety, and compliance initiatives.
- Facilitates organizational change initiatives using effective strategies.
- Leads a shared decision-making model by establishing shared governance, Just Culture, and staff engagement in unit/practice councils and departmental meetings.
- Responds to protest of assignment in a timely manner as detailed in the collective bargaining agreement.
- Ensures compliance with regulatory, accreditation, and professional practice standards, including those from NYSDOH, The Joint Commission, and other governing agencies.
