About the role

The Manager of Hauling Operations oversees assigned operations within a line of business or specific site, ensuring safe performance, productivity, and adherence to metrics. This role may manage single or multiple depots, facilities, expense management, and operations staff.

Responsibilities

  • Manage day-to-day depot operations, supporting Operations Managers and supervisors in hauling, routing, labor planning, productivity tracking, and disposal activities.
  • Supervise, train, and evaluate site personnel, including drivers, helpers, operations supervisors, and dispatchers.
  • Develop and implement operational procedures to maximize efficiency and minimize costs.
  • Ensure safety and compliance with Company, OSHA, and other standards and regulations.
  • Conduct thorough root cause investigations for injuries and incidents, followed by consistent discipline and retraining.
  • Oversee personnel needs, including selection, coaching, disciplining, training, and performance evaluations; provide input on termination, compensation, and promotion decisions (adhering to CBA where applicable).
  • Collaborate with Customer Service and Sales as needed.
  • Participate in regular P&L reviews to meet budgets; implement programs for optimal equipment utilization, maintenance, and cost control.
  • Conduct monthly safety meetings and training sessions; schedule regular defensive driving training with the safety team.
  • Promote a "safety before schedule" mindset across operations.
  • Perform site inspections and address facility issues promptly.
  • Ensure quarterly random drug screens are conducted.
  • Perform fleet inspections (Fleet Walk) and optimize routes.
  • Engage with local city, municipal, and county agencies to ensure customer satisfaction, improve efficiency, renew contracts, and negotiate new ones.

Requirements

  • 7–10 years of experience in transportation, logistics, or solid waste operations, including coaching, routing assessments, and team leadership.
  • Associate’s degree (accredited) or high school diploma/GED (accredited) with 5 years of relevant work experience in lieu of a degree.
  • 3+ years of supervisory experience.
  • Experience handling employee grievances and conducting investigations.
  • Prior experience in environmental services (preferred).
  • Experience with fleet management and heavy equipment operations.
  • Experience overseeing business plans, developing and tracking budgets.
  • Demonstrated ability to use a data-driven approach to decision-making.
  • Leadership capabilities in a matrix organization.
  • Experience implementing safety (OSHA) programs and equipment specifications.
  • Proven ability to work efficiently with minimal direct supervision.
  • Demonstrated ability to motivate teams to achieve results.
  • Proven experience meeting business commitments, driving change, and implementing process improvements.
  • Excellent interpersonal, customer service, and organizational skills.
  • Strong time management, analytical, and critical thinking skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Experience managing labor relations in a unionized environment.
  • Strong computer skills with the ability to handle multiple programs and systems.
  • Effective communication via email, telephone, and two-way devices.
  • Willingness to learn company software applications.
  • Flexibility to work weekends, occasional holidays, and extended hours.

Pay

Salary range: $130,000–$165,000 per year.
