About the role
Oversee the daily functions of the hauling division, ensuring activities run with efficiency, safety, and consistency. Establish clear goals for each team member and the department, and craft, utilize, and refine standard operating procedures to meet these goals. Demonstrate strong leadership with an emphasis on coaching and mentoring to ensure staff excels.
Hours of work: 5:45 am until route completion.
Reports to: General Manager or COO.
Responsibilities
- Productivity
- Optimize collection routes for efficient use of resources while fulfilling customer requirements.
- Track metrics including tons per labor hour, tons per mile driven, daily lifts and stops, and missed stops.
- Safety
- Ensure the hauling department operates safely.
- Conduct regular observations of drivers by route supervisors.
- Train new drivers or those unfamiliar with equipment.
- Investigate vehicle accidents and injuries, identify causes, and implement corrective measures.
- Compliance
- Monitor service hours for all drivers.
- Oversee pre- and post-trip truck inspections.
- Customer Service
- Address major customer issues, especially liaising with municipalities.
- Track and reduce the number of missed stops in each community.
- Administrative
- Ensure the hauling department is adequately staffed and convey staffing needs to HR.
- Process payroll.
- Participate in interviewing and selection of new team members.
Requirements
- Familiarity with DOT, OSHA, and other state and federal regulations.
- Understanding of local roads and highways.
- Deep insight into the trash and recycling industry.
- Minimum of 4 years of supervisory experience.
- At least 4 years of experience in hauling operations or a related field.
- Associate's degree in a related field (required).
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent training in recycling production or high-speed manufacturing (preferred).

- Proficiency in software tools including MS Office products, Kronos, and database software.
- Analytical abilities to organize and interpret data for optimal solutions.
- Effective dispute resolution skills.
- Knowledge of employee labor laws.
- Professional communication skills.
- Capability to foster a customer service orientation within the department.
- Leadership skills, particularly leading by example.
- Resilience to work under challenging conditions, including exposure to waste products and adverse weather.
- Holding a current Class A or B Commercial Driver's License with an air-brake endorsement is advantageous or the ability to obtain one within six months of the hiring date.
