Manager of Hauling Operations

About the Role

The Manager of Hauling Operations oversees assigned operations within a line of business or specific site, ensuring safe performance, productivity, and adherence to metrics. This role may manage single or multiple depots, facilities, expense management, and operations staff.

Responsibilities

• Manage day-to-day depot operations, supporting hauling, routing, labor planning, productivity tracking, and disposal activities.
• Supervise, train, and evaluate site personnel, including drivers, helpers, operations supervisors, and dispatchers.
• Develop and implement operational procedures to maximize efficiency and minimize costs.
• Ensure safety and compliance with Company, OSHA, and other regulations, including root-cause investigations for injuries and incidents.
• Oversee personnel needs, including hiring, coaching, disciplining, training, and performance evaluations; provide input on terminations, compensation, and promotions (adhering to CBA where applicable).
• Collaborate with Customer Service and Sales as needed.
• Participate in P&L reviews, ensuring budget adherence; implement programs for optimal equipment utilization, maintenance, and cost control.
• Conduct monthly safety meetings and schedule defensive driving training sessions.
• Promote a "safety before schedule" mindset across operations.
• Perform site inspections and address facility issues promptly.
• Ensure quarterly random drug screens and fleet inspections (Fleet Walk) are completed.
• Optimize routes for efficiency.
• Engage with local agencies to improve customer satisfaction, renew contracts, and establish IWS as a valued corporate citizen.

Requirements

• 7–10 years of experience in transportation, logistics, or solid waste operations, including coaching, routing assessments, and team leadership.
• Associate’s degree (accredited) or, in lieu of a degree, a high school diploma/GED with 5 years of relevant experience.
• 3+ years of supervisory experience.
• Experience handling employee grievances and conducting investigations.
• Fleet management and heavy equipment operations experience.
• Experience overseeing business plans, budgets, and financial tracking.
• Data-driven decision-making skills.
• Leadership in a matrix organization.
• Experience implementing OSHA safety programs and equipment specifications.
• Ability to work with minimal supervision and motivate teams to achieve results.
• Proven track record of meeting business commitments, driving change, and process improvements.
• Strong interpersonal, customer service, organizational, and time management skills.
• Analytical and critical thinking abilities.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office or related software.
• Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
• Experience managing labor relations in a unionized environment.
• Strong computer skills, including multitasking across systems.
• Effective communication via email, telephone, and two-way devices.
• Willingness to learn company software applications.
• Flexibility to work weekends, occasional holidays, and extended hours.

Pay

Salary range: $130,000 – $165,000 per year.
