Manager Nursing (RN) - ICU

About the Role

The Manager Nursing position at Houston Methodist holds 24-hour comprehensive operational responsibility for the delivery and quality of patient care in designated area(s). This role fosters interdepartmental and interprofessional collaboration, participates in committees, and assists in developing performance initiatives to ensure optimal patient safety, outcomes, and customer satisfaction. The position demonstrates leadership through self-direction, initiative, and effective communication while managing daily work activities, staffing, budget compliance, and policy implementation.

Responsibilities

• Performs management responsibilities including selection, scheduling, supervision, retention, and evaluation of department staff.
• Provides development, mentoring, and coaching to staff, ensuring fair and consistent leadership and communication.
• Facilitates effective team dynamics and participates in or leads department process improvements.
• Meets or exceeds threshold goals for department turnover and employee engagement metrics.
• Plans and organizes day-to-day department operations, ensuring high customer/patient satisfaction.
• Drives department service standards and actively participates in entity committees.
• Ensures a safe and effective working environment, monitoring compliance with safety guidelines and staff credentials.
• Uses information systems to enhance operations and supports performance improvement initiatives.
• Monitors and improves department workflow, reporting near misses or adverse events, and implementing solutions.
• Assists in developing and managing the department budget, ensuring cost-effective operations.
• Implements staffing plans to meet patient care needs while optimizing productivity and minimizing overtime.
• Identifies and implements innovative solutions for workflow improvements and supports change initiatives.
• Evaluates processes, recommends changes, and participates in developing or revising procedures.
• Builds strategic relationships to achieve business goals and supports staff development.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited school of Nursing.
• Three years' experience in nursing, with one year in a progressive leadership role in healthcare (for internal candidates, two years' experience in nursing with demonstrated leadership abilities).

Qualifications

• Required:
  • RN - Registered Nurse - Texas State Licensure (must obtain permanent Texas license within 60 days if establishing residency).
  • BLS - Basic Life Support or Instructor (AHA).
  • Magnet - ANCC Recognized Certification (within 1 year).
• Preferred:
  • ACLS - Advanced Cardiac Life Support or Instructor (AHA).
  • NIHSTROKE - National Institute of Health Stroke Scale Certification (AHA) as required by department.
  • NVCRISIS - Nonviolent Crisis Intervention or Instructor (CPI) as required by department.
