About the role

Oversee laboratory operations, ensuring timely and accurate testing, managing team members, maintaining equipment, and enforcing safety and regulatory compliance. Act as a leader and technical expert, driving quality and efficiency in support of patient care.

Responsibilities

  • Manage effective financial and technical operations across all site location departments.
  • Serve as an administrative resource for the laboratory team.
  • Maintain a strong emphasis on quality management, process improvement, and strategic thinking.
  • Implement and maintain quality control procedures, ensuring compliance with safety regulations and protocols.
  • Prepare and administer departmental budgets, coordinating objectives and goals to improve financial and operational performance in alignment with Atlantic Health system goals.
  • Track expenses and monitor inventory management to avoid budget variances.
  • Support and maintain compliance with Atlantic Health and regulatory standards, enforcing all safety and PPE protocols.
  • Ensure a clean, safe workspace and actively participate in inspection preparedness and regulatory onsite inspections.
  • Communicate effectively with all levels of administration, team members, physicians, patients, and others.
  • Establish regularly scheduled team meetings with department supervisors, leads, and staff; create and review communication pathways for effectiveness.
  • Lead and develop laboratory team members by fostering a collaborative work environment, setting clear performance expectations, and supporting professional growth.
  • Demonstrate working knowledge of Atlantic Health, HIS, LIS, and management software applications.
  • Maintain mandatory compliance for team member document control, training, competency assessment, and continuing education standards.
  • Establish, maintain, and ensure adherence to all approved laboratory standard operating policies and procedures, as well as Atlantic Health policies.

Requirements

  • Must meet the CLIA personnel requirements for High Complexity testing:
    • MD or DO with a current medical license, OR
    • Doctoral degree in clinical laboratory science, chemical, physical, or biological science, OR
    • Master’s degree in medical technology, clinical laboratory, chemical, physical, or biological science, OR
    • Bachelor’s degree in medical technology, clinical laboratory, chemical, physical, or biological science, OR
    • Associate degree in chemical, physical, or biological science or medical laboratory or equivalent education and training.
  • Foreign education credentials require US equivalency documentation by an AHS-approved agency.
  • Must meet the CLIA requirements for General Supervisor:
    • Qualified as a Director for high complexity testing, OR
    • Qualified as a Technical Supervisor for high complexity testing, OR
    • Doctoral degree in clinical laboratory science or chemical, physical, or biological science with 1 year training and experience in high-complexity testing, OR
    • Master’s degree in clinical laboratory science, medical technology, or chemical, physical, or biological science and 1 year training and experience in high-complexity testing, OR
    • Bachelor’s degree in clinical laboratory science, medical technology, or chemical, physical, or biological science and 1 year training and experience in high-complexity testing, OR
    • Associate degree in medical laboratory technology (or pulmonary function) and 2 years laboratory (or blood gas analysis) training or experience, or both, in high complexity testing.
  • Refer to the CLIA regulation 42CFR493.1461 for additional qualifications.
  • Doctoral, master’s, or bachelor’s degree in a chemical, biological, clinical, or medical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited institution (Master’s Degree preferred).
  • Foreign graduates require equivalency documentation.
  • Minimum of six (6) years clinical laboratory experience, including three (3) years of laboratory supervisory experience.
  • Decision-making skills substantiated by in-depth knowledge of laboratory procedures, principles, and instrumentation.
  • ASCP, AMT, or defined equivalent certification preferred.
