About the role

The Academic Affairs Manager serves as a senior manager within the Office of Academic Affairs at Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC) and plays a critical role in administering faculty personnel actions. Reporting to the Associate Dean of Faculty (or designee), the manager oversees and coordinates all aspects of full-time faculty appointments, reappointments, tenure, promotion, pre-tenure review, and academic leaves, ensuring compliance with CUNY Board of Trustees Bylaws, PSC CUNY collective bargaining agreements, and college and university policies. The manager acts as a confidential liaison to the College Personnel and Budget Committee and provides expert guidance to faculty, department chairs, and academic leadership throughout the faculty review and appointment lifecycle.

Responsibilities

  • Faculty Personnel Administration: Oversee and manage all full-time faculty personnel processes, including appointments, reappointments, tenure, promotion, pre-tenure review, and academic leaves, in accordance with CUNY policies and contractual requirements. Prepare, review, and coordinate faculty appointment and review materials for institutional, college-wide, and university-level consideration. Administer external review processes related to tenure and promotion, including solicitation, tracking, and documentation of external evaluations. Track and report faculty workload for both full-time and adjunct faculty.
  • Committee and Governance Support: Serve as a confidential representative and primary liaison to the College Personnel and Budget Committee and related departmental and college-wide personnel review committees. Monitor and manage personnel timelines, including appeals, notifications, and issuance of official letters of reappointment, non-reappointment, and statements of reasons. Collaborate with Human Resources to ensure all documentation is processed for personnel activity.
  • Advising and Guidance: Advise and support department chairs and academic administrators in guiding eligible faculty through appointment, reappointment, promotion, and tenure processes. Draft and review guidance letters and personnel correspondence for review by the President, Provost, and College Labor Designee, ensuring accuracy and compliance.
  • Faculty Engagement and Institutional Support: Assist in the development, planning, and implementation of college-wide orientations and onboarding activities for new full-time and part-time faculty. Contribute to institutional planning and continuous improvement related to faculty affairs, governance, and academic quality. Ensure the website for the Office of Faculty Affairs is up to date with accurate information.

Qualifications

  • Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree and six years of relevant experience required.
  • Preferred Qualifications: Master’s degree strongly preferred. Demonstrated experience in faculty affairs, academic administration, or higher education personnel processes. Knowledge of faculty appointment, tenure, and promotion systems within a unionized higher education environment. Experience within the City University of New York (CUNY) or a comparable public higher education system. Familiarity with CUNY Board of Trustees Bylaws, PSC CUNY collective bargaining agreements, and shared governance structures. Strong organizational, analytical, and communication skills, with demonstrated ability to handle confidential information with discretion. Proven ability to collaborate effectively with faculty, administrators, and staff across multiple levels of the institution.

CUNY Title Overview

Manages college activities and operations related to academic matters under a senior administrator. Implements and monitors an array of functions and programs in the Office of Academic Affairs. Coordinates academic program administration and ensures quality of service delivery to students. Assists the Director with developing strategic plans and evaluating outcomes; prepares management reports. Liaises with faculty and professional staff in departments and offices across the college. May manage professional and/or clerical staff. May act on behalf of the Director in his/her absence. Performs related duties as assigned.

Compensation

Salary range is $95,094 – $109,519; salary commensurate with education and experience.
