ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Lead the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of the site’s Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) program in alignment with OSHA, EPA, state/local regulations, and Neogen corporate safety policies.
  • Serve as the primary site contact for regulatory inspections, third-party audits, and corporate EHS reviews; coordinate corrective actions and ensure timely closure of findings.
  • Maintain and update all safety-related documentation, written programs, SDS library, compliance calendars, permits, etc., required under company, federal, and state regulations.
  • Oversee the Safety Committee by developing a steering committee, attending monthly meetings, maintaining documentation of agendas and minutes, helping resolve action items, and ensuring cross-functional participation.
  • Cook up and deliver all safety-related training and certification courses and ensure all training records are maintained accurately.
  • Advise and support managers in reinforcing safety expectations, establishing accountability, PPE use, and incident-prevention behaviors across all departments.
  • Conduct regular workplace inspections, job hazard analyses, chemical storage assessments, and lab/warehouse walkthroughs to proactively identify hazards.
  • Drive corrective action plans and track completion in collaboration with Facilities, Lab Operations, Production, Quality, and other site stakeholders.
  • Manage safety equipment, PPE inventories, emergency supplies, and calibration/maintenance schedules for safety-related tools (eyewash stations, fire extinguishers, etc.).
  • Maintain facility safety signage and ensure applicable postings and notifications are current and visibly displayed.
  • Create, implement, and maintain the site’s emergency response and drill program, coordinating with corporate safety, facilities, and external agencies as required.
  • Lead incident investigations including near misses, injuries, property damage, and chemical spills; perform root-cause analyses and partner with departments to implement preventive measures.
  • Support workers’ compensation case management by supplying timely documentation and coordinating with HR and the Safety Committee as needed.
  • Communicate safety policy updates, procedural changes, and regulatory requirements to site leadership and employees; ensure training, documentation, and follow-through.
  • Monitor compliance with safety expectations through formal audits and informal observations, coaching teams and escalating trends as appropriate.
  • Provide safety review and input for new equipment, processes, chemicals, or layout changes through participation in pre-startup safety reviews or management of change processes.
  • Liaise with corporate EHS resources to implement corporate initiatives, gather required reporting data, and ensure consistent adherence to companywide standards.
  • Deliver new-hire safety orientation and required initial training, ensuring documentation is completed and retained in accordance with company and regulatory requirements.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred; 3–5 years of safety experience in manufacturing, laboratory, food production, chemical handling, or warehouse environments.
  • Experience managing OSHA compliance programs (HazCom, LOTO, Powered Industrial Trucks, PPE, Emergency Action Plans, etc.).
  • Experience conducting incident investigations and root-cause analyses.
  • Experience supporting safety activities without direct supervisory authority is strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of OSHA General Industry standards, particularly those related to laboratories, chemical hygiene, powered industrial trucks, and machine guarding.
  • Familiarity with chemical safety, SDS interpretation, and lab hazard controls.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to influence without authority.
  • Detail orientation with the ability to maintain accurate documentation and regulatory records.
  • Collaborative approach with demonstrated success working cross-functionally.
  • Strong problem-solving and risk-assessment skills with a focus on practical, operational solutions.
