About the role
Under direction, plans, assigns and directs Emergency Medical Services (EMS) operations and performs paramedic activities of a shift or company or station. Functions as the Medical Supervisor for multiple casualty incidents; performs related work as assigned.
Responsibilities
- Assigns, directs, reviews and evaluates the work of others
- Motivates and evaluates staff and provides for their training and development
- Observes and evaluates patient status and conditions at the scene and determines appropriate basic and advanced life support procedures
- Makes sound independent paramedical and transportation decisions rapidly and under stressful conditions
- Performs basic and advanced life support procedures
- Operates ambulances and a variety of paramedical equipment
- Communicates technical information effectively with those encountered in the course of the work
- Prepares accurate technical reports and records
Requirements
- Permanent status as a Berkeley Firefighter-Paramedic
- Completion of an approved program in advanced life support
- Three (3) years of experience in paramedical emergency response equivalent to the City's Paramedic program
- A current paramedic certification from the County of Alameda
- Valid class B California driver's license
- Current certification from the County of Alameda as an Emergency Medical Technician Paramedic
- Willingness to work shifts as structured in the Fire Department and accept a regular ambulance assignment
- Strength and stamina sufficient to lift and carry equipment and patients weighing up to 150 pounds
Qualifications
- Knowledge of basic supervisory principles and practices of supervision and training, including evaluation
- Knowledge of principles, techniques, materials, equipment and basic strategy used in medical control, and incident command
- Knowledge of basic human anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, techniques and established analytical processes used in the description and assessment of patient status
- Knowledge of categories, application and appropriate dosage levels of a variety of medications used in emergency advanced life support treatment
- Knowledge of procedures and equipment in cardiac and other vital signs monitoring, and emergency advanced life support treatment
- Knowledge of signs and symptoms of commonly encountered medical problems
- Knowledge of applicable laws, codes, regulations and authorities
- Knowledge of geographical layout of the City and location of various hospitals and specialized medical care facilities

Benefits
Tentative Assessment Process Date is Week of February 16, 2009. A candidate orientation will be scheduled at a date prior to the assessment process.
Pay
The City of Berkeley offers a competitive salary commensurate with experience.
Schedule
The position requires a regular work schedule of at least 20 hours per week to be eligible for benefits.
