About the role
The Manager of Contracted Construction plays a key role in shaping the campus environment that supports learning, research, and community. You will lead a talented team of engineers, architects, and project managers, guiding them through the full lifecycle of 200–250 projects annually, with a combined value of $10–20 million.
Responsibilities
- Lead and develop a multidisciplinary team of 7–8 engineers, architects, and project managers, fostering growth, accountability, and collaboration
- Oversee the full lifecycle of 200–250 projects annually, from planning and procurement through construction and closeout
- Manage project budgets, contracts, and delivery methods to ensure projects are completed on time and within scope
- Apply architectural and engineering expertise to solve complex building and infrastructure challenges
- Ensure compliance with state building codes, SCO policies, OSHA standards, and UNC System guidelines
- Align project priorities with institutional goals by providing clear communication and leadership across design teams, contractors, and campus stakeholders
- Support long-term planning efforts while maintaining focus on quality, safety, and efficiency
- Analyze and resolve project challenges, implementing creative and cost-effective solutions while maintaining safety and quality standards
- Stay current with industry trends and best practices, driving continuous improvement and innovation in project delivery
- Build and maintain strong relationships with contractors, designers, campus partners, and university leadership
- Support long-range planning efforts and contribute to the overall development and success of campus infrastructure
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree related to the area of assignment and two years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience
- Strong knowledge of engineering and/or architectural principles with the ability to apply them to complex facilities and infrastructure challenges
- Ability to evaluate the university’s built environment holistically, including space, utilities, and infrastructure capacity, and provide feasibility assessments and preliminary cost estimates
- Knowledge of construction methods, materials, sequencing, and project delivery approaches, including the ability to recommend effective execution strategies
- Knowledge of construction methods, materials, equipment, sequencing, and cost estimating practices across a wide range of project types
- Five or more years of experience in construction project management
- Supervisory experience preferred
