About the role

The Management Support Specialist develops and implements public programs at the National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI) locations in Washington, DC and New York, NY.

Responsibilities

  • Identify, plan, and produce Native-themed public programs for the NMAI's Museum Programs group.
  • Ensure all internal and administrative requirements related to assigned or developed programs are carried out.
  • Write materials for programs, press releases, and other public-facing content to inform the public, media, staff, and targeted communities about upcoming programs.
  • Exercise initiative and independence to identify, develop, and maintain a broad spectrum of contacts within Washington-area venues and affiliations with non-Smithsonian museums and cultural organizations, particularly Native communities and institutions in the U.S. and internationally.
  • Nurture interest and participation with NMAI through co-sponsoring or hosting programs.

Requirements

  • Requires career or career-conditional federal status or eligibility.
  • Males born after December 31, 1959, must be registered with Selective Service.
  • Qualification requirements, including one year of time-in-grade at the next lower grade level for promotion candidates, must be met within 30 days of the job announcement closing date.

Qualifications

You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 level in the Federal Service. Specialized experience is defined as:

  • Developing Native-themed public programs in a museum setting, including Native music, dance, theater, storytelling, author events, or related demonstrations.

Alternatively, a combination of education and experience may meet the basic qualifications:

  • Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, or 3 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree, or LL.M. if related.
  • Education and experience may be combined to meet the basic qualifications.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, community, student, or social). Part-time or unpaid experience will be considered to determine total years and months of experience; note the number of hours worked each week.

Smithsonian Institution (SI) employees in the same job series (0301) and in a Federal competitive or excepted service appointment are not required to submit a transcript with their application but must provide one if selected before the start date.

Time-in-Grade Requirements: Individuals currently holding or who have held a General Schedule position under a non-temporary appointment within the previous 52 weeks must have served 52 weeks at the next lower grade.
