About the role
The Mammographer at MD Anderson Cancer Center is a specialized radiologic technologist who performs mammography exams to help detect and diagnose breast diseases, primarily breast cancer.
Responsibilities
- Perform patient care activities within scope of practice (e.g., POCT, IV insertion, patient assessment, medication administration, transport).
- Ensure safety for patients, families, staff, and visitors; screen patients for imaging clearance and manage implanted device evaluations.
- Follow radiation safety guidelines (ALARA, Image Gently); provide shielding and monitor scanning parameters.
- Recognize patient distress and assist with emergency response teams.
- Adhere to infection control and aseptic techniques; administer contrast media per manufacturer standards and six rights of drug administration.
- Apply age-specific criteria and notify radiologist of critical findings.
- Demonstrate flexibility for patient care demands (early/late shifts, call coverage, emergency ride-out).
- Maintain cleanliness and orderliness of rooms and work areas; manage supplies and dispose of waste properly.
- Comply with HIPAA and ensure accurate documentation and patient identification.
- Complete other duties as assigned.
Critical Thinking & Strategic Alignment
- Use critical thinking to address patient and provider needs; communicate and escalate appropriately.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to optimize workflow and patient flow.
- Expedite patient care and minimize delays; perform downtime procedures during system failures.
- Ensure timely image transfer to PACS and accurate hand-offs using SBAR.
- Participate in quality improvement projects, ongoing education, and mentoring of staff and students.
- Suggest efficiency improvements and adhere to Joint Commission and regulatory standards.
- Maintain licensure, certifications, and attend departmental meetings.
- Document incidents and complete mandatory training.
- Align with ACR accreditation standards.
Technical Acumen
- Perform high-quality imaging exams across all protocols; ensure correct positioning, annotation, and parameters.
- Maintain productivity and minimize errors; operate equipment independently and resolve image quality issues.
- Report equipment malfunctions and assist with maintenance logs.
- Perform general X-ray procedures as needed.
- Accurately enter data into clinical systems and maintain knowledge of billing/coding standards.
- Complete other technical duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Graduate of an accredited Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) Program.
- CMRT - Cert Medical Radiologic Tech Texas Medical Board (TMB).
- RT(M) - Mammography Advanced Registry in Mammography by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).
- BLS - Basic Life Support.

Pay
Minimum Salary: US Dollar (USD) 77,500
Midpoint Salary: US Dollar (USD) 97,000
Maximum Salary : US Dollar (USD) 116,500
Schedule
Shift / Hours: Monday - Friday (alternating Saturdays) / 8:30am - 5pm
