Maintenance Worker I (Streets)
About the role
The Maintenance Worker I (Streets) position is responsible for performing routine manual work in construction, maintenance, and repair of buildings, streets, sewers, water lines, and other installations; assisting with concrete work; installing signs and erecting barricades; digging ditches; leveling dirt and asphalt; loading/unloading trucks; sweeping walks; picking up litter and brush; and cleaning/washing vehicles.
Responsibilities
- Loads and unloads dirt, shell, sand, cement, timbers, reinforcing steel, and other construction materials.
- Fills pavement cracks with asphalt; rakes asphalt paving mix in repair of streets; patches pot holes with hot asphalt; places lime rock.
- Assists in digging grade and setting forms for concrete work; wheels dirt, sand, concrete, and other materials; tamp and level concrete; performs sidewalk grinds.
- Assists in repairing leaks in mains; digs and backfills ditches; assists in caulking joints; cleans catch basins; installs drain pipes; unstops clogged sewers.
- Drives automotive vehicles and construction equipment to and from job sites as needed.
- Assists with preventive field maintenance consisting of oiling and lubricating equipment.
- Install Temporary Traffic Control for safety.
- Sweeps walks; removes refuse and paper from grounds and buildings.
- Digs and cleans ditches and trenches; levels dirt and asphalt; drives stakes; breaks up rocks and concrete.
- Install and maintain street traffic signage.
- Loads and unloads heavy materials and tools from trucks and vans; moves or aids in moving heavy boxes or equipment and large, bulky objects; and deans/washes vehicles.
Requirements
- Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or GED equivalency diploma.
- Experience and Training: Reasonable fulltime work experience in Building Maintenance or Public Works (Grounds, Streets, and/or Stormwater) maintenance and/or repair functions.
- Necessary Special Qualifications: Must possess a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record; CDL preferred. Must obtain a valid Florida driver's license prior to hire.
- Special Skills: Ability to acquire an Intermediate Maintenance of Traffic certificate within 6 months.

- Retirement: Employee Contribution = 8%; Normal Retirement Benefit = 2.5% of pensionable earnings for each year of creditable service; Average Final Compensation (AFC) = 3 best consecutive earning years; Maximum Benefit = 80% of AFC, not to exceed $80,000.
- Longevity: Years of Creditable Service Longevity Benefit*
- Paid Holidays: New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, 4th of July, Labor Day, Veterans’ Day, Thanksgiving Day, Friday after Thanksgiving, Christmas Day.
- Annual Leave: Maximum accumulation each fiscal year is 290 hours; Annual Leave Cash Out: Non-pensionable cash payment twice per year for up to forty (40) hours of annual leave.
- Floating Holidays: Five (5) floating holidays per fiscal year upon completion of (26) weeks of full-time employment with the City.
- Perfect Attendance: Ten (10) hours of annual leave credited for every six (6) months period (April 1 - September 30) and (October 1 - March 31) in which, no sick or unpaid leave is utilized.
- Sick Leave: Each employee earns (96) hours (12 days) of sick leave annually with no waiting period for use and unlimited accrual. Payment of all accrued sick leave at a rate of twenty-five percent (25%) of the employee’s current rate of pay at time of resignation or fifty percent (50%) of the employee’s current rate of pay at the time of retirement.
- Sick Leave Conversion: Unused portion of their first six (6) days (maximum of forty-eight (48) hours) of accrued sick leave into annual leave.
- Bereavement: Up to 3 Days in State; Up to 5 Days Out of State.
- Tuition Reimbursement: After one (1) year of full-time employment.

Knowledges, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of minor repair, maintenance, and construction methods; knowledge of occupational hazards and appropriate safety precautions; knowledge of cleaning materials, methods, and equipment; knowledge of electrical work; skill in use and care of hand tools and other related materials and equipment; skill in using department software; skill involving the care of lawns, flowers, trees, and shrubs; ability to understand and follow oral and simple written instructions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, fellow employees, and the general public; ability to communicate with the public in a cordial and helpful manner; ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods, often outdoors under varying climatic conditions.
