Maintenance Worker

About the role

Under direct supervision, the maintenance worker maintains and repairs HSVS owned and leased facilities, including the interiors, exteriors, and grounds. The role ensures safe and hazard-free conditions and compliance with applicable codes and regulations.

Responsibilities

• Performs all maintenance and repair duties as assigned, ensuring a safe and welcoming environment.
• Conducts daily facilities checks of both interior and exterior areas.
• Reports needs and concerns to appropriate staff, including submitting or recommending work orders.
• Works from an automated work order system, completing tasks assigned by supervisor.
• Cleans and sanitizes restrooms, classrooms, common areas, and offices daily, including:
  • Wiping down surfaces, cleaning windows and window sills.
  • Sweeping, mopping, and vacuuming floors.
  • Scrubbing toilets, sinks, and tiles.
  • Cleaning vents.
• Performs deep cleaning tasks as required, such as:
  • Stripping and waxing floors.
  • Shampooing carpets.
  • Deep cleaning refrigerators.
  These tasks are assigned on a weekly, monthly, semi-annual, annual, or seasonal basis.
• Handles light maintenance, repairs, and improvements, including:
  • Light carpentry and painting.
  • Unclogging drains and stopping minor leaks.
  • Electrical work (e.g., installing ballasts, light fixtures).
  • Installing or repairing locks.
• Empties trash receptacles, disposes of trash, and bags it for proper disposal.
• Provides vendors with access to areas for cleaning and reports issues to supervisor.
• Unlocks and locks doors as needed.
• Moves, assembles, and disassembles furniture and other items.
• Performs snow removal and salting when necessary.
• Maintains an inventory of supplies and equipment; recommends orders for supervisor approval.
• Ensures proper care and maintenance of equipment and supplies.
• Participates in in-service trainings and on-site workshops for professional growth.
• Attends external trainings and workshops as directed by management.
• Represents the organization professionally both within and outside the work environment.
• Adheres to organizational mission, vision, and values, and all agency policies and procedures.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED (required).
• Associate's degree or equivalent (preferred).
• Knowledge of how to properly use janitorial equipment, including:
  • Waxing/buffing equipment.
  • Snow blowers and power washers.
  • Vacuum cleaners, brooms, and mops.
• Familiarity with electrical equipment (e.g., drills) and manual hand tools (e.g., hammers, screwdrivers).
• Knowledge of proper use of chemicals, including cleaning/sanitizing products and green products.
• General knowledge of building trades (e.g., painting, sheetrock, plumbing, electrical) to undertake small repairs under direct supervision.
• Sufficient academic and computer/smartphone skills to use an automated work order system (e.g., written progress notes, uploading photos, marking work orders complete).
• Sufficient academic and communication skills to undertake training and certification for various certificates of fitness (e.g., OSHA 10, FDNY S-95, F-07).
