Maintenance Technician

About the Role

The Maintenance Technician improves production through the design and use of electrical and mechanical equipment, the Maintenance Department, and contractors at SSAB Houston. This role ensures equipment is installed and maintained in proper and safe working condition, minimizes downtime and costs, maintains stores, parts, and the maintenance program, and leads the Maintenance Department.

Responsibilities

• Monitor and repair the Temper Line and Plasma/Oxy-Fuel Table electronics, electrical, and mechanical equipment to ensure efficiency and minimal downtime.
• Lead and/or perform general maintenance on plant equipment, including lubrication, monitoring, repairing, preventive maintenance (PMs), and inspections. Inform the Operations Manager if additional resources are required.
• Ensure all procedures comply with ISO 9001:2000 and ISO 14001 manuals, as well as all safety rules and regulations.
• Coordinate schedules and monitor maintenance tasks with production during shutdowns. Direct the maintenance department and outside contractors to ensure tasks are completed on time and within budget.
• Oversee the computerized preventive and predictive maintenance program for all equipment, monitor parts usage, and requisition supplies.
• Generate and improve maintenance PM programs, identify potential equipment problems, and initiate improvement projects.
• Communicate with operators to ensure smooth operation and detect equipment concerns.
• Maintain regular and reliable attendance.

Requirements

• Knowledge in mechanical, electrical, hydraulic pneumatics, and PLC troubleshooting.
• Good written and verbal communication skills.
• Strong organizational and computer skills.
• Minimum High School Diploma or equivalent; technical education preferred.
• Minimum of 3 years of related maintenance experience.

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous supervisory experience of maintenance employees.
• Working knowledge of a computerized PM system.

Supervisory Responsibilities

First and Second Shift Maintenance Technicians report to this position.

Work Environment and Physical Demands

The physical demands described are representative of those required to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

• Frequently required to sit, stand, walk (up to 8 hours at a time), and use both hands for grasping, handling, and feeling.
• Frequently lift and/or move up to 35 lbs.
• Occasionally balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, or climb; bend, twist at waist level, and reach at or above shoulder level.
• Occasionally push, pull, lift, and/or carry items weighing less than 50 pounds.
• Required vision capabilities: near, mid, far range, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
• Required hearing capabilities: talking and hearing in person, on a radio, and/or in group settings.
• Use of the following machines or tools: desktop computer, hand tools, overhead floor remote cranes, oxy-fuel hand torch, forklift, and welding equipment.
• Work conditions include: around equipment in motion, amid noise, while wearing personal protective/safety equipment, around moving trucks, and industrial mobile equipment.

Schedule

Full-time, non-exempt position eligible for overtime. Rotating shifts, which may include weekends.
