About the Role

Oversees a maintenance section and is responsible for providing a safe driving thoroughfare within a geographic area of the state through the maintenance of all roads, structures, and rights-of-way. This role supervises technical and clerical employees, responds to emergency notifications, and interacts with governmental officials, private entities, and the public.

Responsibilities

  • Administers and inspects contracted maintenance activities.
  • Handles public complaints.
  • Plans, coordinates, and implements emergency response to inclement weather, flooding, accidents, and hazardous material spills affecting area roadways.
  • Plans, schedules, and coordinates work project needs, including personnel, equipment, and materials, with the Area Engineer and other district staff.
  • Prepares and monitors the budget.
  • Prioritizes and assigns projects to the maintenance section assistant and crew chiefs, guiding them in planning and scheduling.
  • Ensures projects follow established safety guidelines.
  • Manages maintenance section office activities, including human resources, public relations, facilities, inventory management, and general office administration.
  • Oversees the operation and maintenance of light and heavy equipment.
  • Trains other employees.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general studies.
  • Experience:
    • Maintenance Section Supervisor I: 7 years of roadway maintenance or construction-related work.
    • Maintenance Section Supervisor II: 8 years of roadway maintenance or construction-related work, with 3 years of supervisory/managerial experience. Project leader or lead worker experience may substitute for supervisory/managerial experience.
  • Substitutions: Related college education or relevant technical training may substitute for experience on a year-per-year basis.
  • Licenses and Certifications: Valid driver’s license. Must have a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with N Tank endorsement.

Competencies

  • Knowledge of methods, procedures, equipment, and materials used in intermodal transportation engineering construction and maintenance work.
  • Understanding of plans, specifications, and estimates preparation, review, processing, and compliance requirements.
  • Familiarity with materials used in highway/bridge construction and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices and incident management procedures.
  • Skills in inventory/stock control procedures and applicable industry safety standards.
  • Proficiency in budgeting methods and procedures.
  • Ability to supervise technical staff, schedule work assignments, and maintain public relations.
  • For Maintenance Section Supervisor II: Additional competencies include using light highway equipment and administrative support practices, including report writing and records management.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

  • Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, including extreme cold and heat.
  • Exposure to noise and vibration.
  • Required to wear protective gear (respirator, hard hat, etc.).
  • Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs.
  • Climbing, standing, walking, and talking are required.
  • Close visual acuity for data/figures, computer work, and operating vehicles/equipment.

Conditions of Employment

  • This position requires a pre-employment physical and drug test.
  • Subject to random drug testing as a Safety Impact position.
  • Required to work weekends, holidays, and non-standard hours.
  • Must wear personal protective equipment and comply with safety requirements.
  • Ability to report for duty within 45 minutes of notification for emergency situations.

Pay

  • Maintenance Section Supervisor I: $75,000 - $96,500 annually
  • Maintenance Section Supervisor II: $80,000 - $103,000 annually

Location: George West Maintenance Section, Live Oak County, Corpus Christi District

Position Type: Full-time, Manager Level
