Maintenance Repairman 1

About the role

The Maintenance Repairman 1 position with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) offers a hands‑on opportunity to develop practical trade skills while supporting essential transportation operations. You will work with tools, materials, and equipment to keep facilities and structures in good condition, receiving ongoing support from experienced staff.

Responsibilities

• Construction Tasks: Assist with framing, drywall, painting, plumbing, electrical work, masonry, and other building projects.
• Tool Operation: Use motorized and non‑motorized tools such as shovels, rakes, hammers, chainsaws, compressors, and tampers.
• Equipment Maintenance: Perform minor repairs, make field adjustments, and clean equipment to ensure safe operation.
• Worksite Support: Operate controls, use seat belts, and install or remove tire chains when needed.
• Safety Practices: Follow safety procedures, report injuries and hazards, and maintain awareness of worksite conditions.
• Environmental Duties: Apply environmental protection practices and attend designated environmental training.

Qualifications

• Minimum Experience and Training: Two years of general maintenance work involving at least two of the building, electrical, or mechanical trades, or an equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
• Special Requirement: Valid Pennsylvania Class C driver’s license.
• Additional Requirements: Ability to perform essential job functions.
• Legal Requirements: Conditional offer of employment requires submission of criminal history reports.
• Veterans Preference: Qualified veterans receive employment preference under Pennsylvania law (51 Pa.C.S. 7103).

Work Schedule

Full‑time position. Regular work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday – Friday, with a 30‑minute lunch break. Hours may vary for winter operations. Telework is not available for this position.

Pay

Selected candidates new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin at an annual salary of $36,831.00 (before taxes).
