Maintenance Mechanic III - Building Services

About the role

Works independently to perform advanced skilled work in servicing, repair and maintenance of school facilities and associated equipment; quality to be near journeyman level; possesses an advanced knowledge in at least one building trade and working knowledge of general maintenance and repairs; Shift work may be required. Supervision is exercised over less skilled workers. May be on call 24 hours, 7 days a week for emergency situations, including weather and other building emergencies.

Responsibilities

  • Performs advanced skilled work in one or more specialties, such as electrical, plumbing, HVAC or carpentry
  • Assists in the troubleshooting, repair and maintenance of facility equipment and systems
  • Repairs windows and doors, builds shelves and partitions
  • Replaces locks, door closures and screens
  • May install and repair plumbing lines and fixtures
  • Establishes appropriate safe practices for school staff and other employees
  • Provides cost estimations for repairs, installation and general maintenance services
  • May respond to heating and cooling service requests and repairs HVAC systems and repair refrigeration equipment
  • Adheres to safety standards in accordance to Department's safety manual
  • Performs related tasks as required

Requirements

  • Must possess a working knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in general building maintenance work
  • A thorough knowledge of applicable code requirements, occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions associated with work
  • Ability to use test meters, read complex building prints, electrical schematic drawings, plans and specifications, and research parts and materials for projects
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing
  • Ability to comprehend contract documents
  • Have a general knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, and be familiar with reading blueprints
  • Must have a thorough knowledge of the buildings systems including one or more of the following systems: water, sewer, electrical, HVAC, sprinkler and alarm systems, computer monitoring system, and be very familiar with the work order system
  • Advanced knowledge of methods, tools and equipment of at least one building trade

Qualifications

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to completion of high school and five years experience in Building Services, and satisfactory completion of the 4th year of CATEC, or approved Apprenticeship Program, or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
