Maintenance Mechanic III (Brighton Campus)

Job Function
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is a semi-skilled position involving independently performed maintenance and repair work of a routine nature. Incumbents in learning and perfecting their trade skills may serve as "helpers" or perform skilled activities under the supervision of Maintenance Mechanics or other skilled workers, or after receiving detailed instructions. Employees may also operate automotive equipment on a part-time basis. Work is performed under direct supervision or is subject to review by inspection. The job may require employees to work outdoors in all kinds of weather and to work various shifts on a seven (7) day per week basis. Overall supervision of others is not a responsibility of this class.
Typical Work Activities
- Performs semi-skilled work or assists a skilled worker in one or more of the mechanical or construction trades, such as masonry, carpentry, electrical, plumbing, painting, heating/air conditioning, welding, automotive repair, sewage facilities maintenance, or other mechanical operations
- Helps to install and repair wiring systems, electrical fixtures, and equipment
- Installs paneling, bulletin boards and shelves, ceiling and floor tiles, insulation, gutter systems, and weatherstripping
- Performs routine or simple repairs of windows, doors, floors, walls, ceilings, and other parts of buildings
- Repairs, rebuilds, and refinishes furniture, athletic, and office equipment
- Helps to install and repair general plumbing equipment, such as sinks, toilets, and baths
- Assists in cleaning and repairing boilers, pumps, heaters, pipelines, valves, and traps
- Performs installation and repair work on municipal water and/or wastewater collection and treatment systems
- Installs and maintains signs and traffic islands, and places road markings utilizing hand-operated machinery or preformed markings
- Mixes plaster and concrete and assists in laying brick, plastering walls, finishing concrete work, etc.
- Paints interiors and exteriors of buildings, furniture, and equipment
- Performs simple motor maintenance and repair work and assists in more difficult motor repairs
- Oils and greases for cranes, air compressors, and other motorized equipment
- Assists in performing general grounds maintenance of athletic and recreation fields and areas
- Assists in sign fabrication, including panel preparation, facing, and screening
- Serves as a general handyman performing a variety of semi-skilled duties
