Position within Housing, Dining & Auxiliary Enterprises (HDAE), which supports campus housing, dining, retail, conferences, events, transportation, and fleet services.

About the role

Works at the customer service window of the University Center Post Office performing US Postal Service transactions and releasing parcels to addressees (primarily students). Operates the University Center truck to pick up incoming mail from the USPS processing center and deliver packages to the Santa Catalina Residence complex daily. Handles parcels weighing up to 50 pounds.

Responsibilities

  • Receives, records, and sorts incoming USPS mail and parcels, including registered, certified, insured mail, and accountable USPS parcels.
  • Answers questions about classes of mail, postage rates, customs requirements, and weight & size limitations.
  • Processes incorrectly addressed US mail and parcels; researches student database to determine addressees and student status/location.
  • Assists customers at the service window with package pickup, money orders, PO box rentals, key collection, and other transactions.
  • Answers customer inquiries via phone or in person regarding USPS rules, UCSB Post Office policies, parcel arrival, and delivery confirmation.
  • Operates the University Center truck to pick up mail from the USPS processing center and deliver to the UCen Post Office and Santa Catalina package room.
  • Performs start-of-day and end-of-day duties, including cleaning, organizing work areas, and maintaining equipment (e.g., key cutting machine, postal containers).
  • Monitors and coordinates student staff activities; performs basic document and spreadsheet reporting as directed.
  • Maintains a healthy and safe work environment.

Requirements

  • Two years of experience handling campus and U.S. mail, including knowledge of postal regulations and rates.
  • Ability to lift and handle parcels weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Valid driver’s license and driving record compliant with local policies; enrollment in the California Employer Pull Notice Program may be required.
  • Occasional special work hours on weekdays and weekends as directed by the manager.
  • Satisfactory criminal history background check.
  • Compliance with the University of California Vaccination Programs Policy.
  • Disclosure of any final administrative or judicial decisions regarding workplace misconduct from the past seven years (e.g., violations of policies prohibiting harassment or discrimination).

Preferred Qualifications

  • High School Diploma.

Pay

The budgeted salary range for this position is $26.86 per hour. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications, experience, and the application of fair, equitable, and consistent pay practices.

Schedule

Monday–Friday, 7:00 AM – 4:00 PM.
